They JUST told me yesterday that we're gonna be hitting up the beach in Florida. I had no idea this was planned...and I have no filters. Well salty air/water + sand + L glass is not cool without a filter. So I visit Normancamera.com to see about a filter. $76.95 for a B+W multi-coated UV Haze. As most of you know, I don't go in for cheap so non-MC was out of the question even at 2/3 of the price.
Ground shipping? No way it'd be here in time from Michigan. So...overnight it is. Well ok overnight shipping for a filter is ridiculously unbalanced spending, IMO. So what do I do? I throw in a Sekonic L-358 in to justify it. Wasn't a bad price though...$229.95.
I've been wanting a light meter that works in 1/3 stops anyway...
You made me pee my pants, I'm laughing so hard...
What are we doing up anyway? Isn't like 3:15 am? Well, have fun...:)

Hope ya throw the camera in a nice plastic bag and tape the ends behind the zoom ring on whatever L your bringing. That sand manages to get EVERYWHERE, I wouldn't even trust a 1 series body (and most deffinitly not a lesser body)

Yeah she'll be covered. I've shot at dirt tracks with dust n crap flying everywhere...stupidly without a filter but smartly without Ls. Kit lens & shiddy fiddy mostly.

Man I groan whenever I find out I have a wedding on a beach.:(
The sound of sand scratching away as you zoom the focus ring really sucks.

Yeah I'm a bit skeert...but I have clear UPS bags (for wrapping clothing and such) so I'll throw the gear under/in one of those.

You might have been better off picking up something like a Canon A610 (although not sealed either) for the beach _ darn good P&S camera.
I've got the filters but cringe at taking the DSLR to the beach. Maybe for a short period of time but not for long. Ain't too much to look at on our beaches except tore up dwellings from Hurricane Katrina > :(

My sis has an A520 so if I feel like shooting close stuff like Kyle playing, I'll grab it. The XT ++++ will be for some long range "interest". :D

at least to the beach.
They can hand their rig off to the "photographer" (you)... remove THEIR media... plug in YOUR media... you get the shot... you remove YOUR media... REINSERT theirs... and hand it back... sand and all!
Your expensive rig is safe and preserved... and you have the shots... on whatever nature (someone else) provided.
Sounds like a plan to me...
Heh, Beaches... they should be banned... to photographers! For their own sake. Mostly nasty looking subjects, anyway. Yeah, there's your occasional "bird"... but, at what cost ($$$) for that rare exception?

Hmm...using a complete stranger's rig...yeah..right...ok that'd go over great!
I bought my expensive equipment to use it....I'll take precautions but I won't leave it behind simply because I'm too scared to get it dirty. I've shot in bad conditions before and made it through just fine by not taking unnecessary risks. Using it is not an unnecessary risk. I wouldn't get my money's worth out of it if I never used it for fear of destroying it.
i'm at the beaches A LOT and get some damn good sh*t there! i've only gotten sand grinding between the focus ring once and that was only because the kid of the family i was asked to shoot walked over and dumped a handful of sand onto my lens while is was setting up. i didn't even know what to say or do for a few moments when it happened  and the lens (17-40) had to be sent in for service. anyways, like i said, i'm on the sand a lot and i've never had problems caused by my own handling. i do use the UV if there's excessive crap flying in the air though, other wise it stays off. oh yeah and if you're mostly there to shoot and bring the tripod, it'll sink into the sand so be sure to extend the last section first (at least half way) and leave it extended til you clean it. otherwise you get a crunching noise in the leg locks or worse yet, deep, biting, scratches when extending/retracting. have loads of fun you lucky bastard

somebody in the family's rig. Then, months later, when you are all together and they are complaining about that "horrible, gritty... grinding... crunching sound" from all that destructive sand that got sucked into their rig... you can get your rig... pull it out and say, "Just listen to this..."
When they hear nothing but the sweet purring of the USM motors... hunting for a good focus... and they all look at you weird and ask, "What sound?"
You can smile wryly and reply, "Exactly." ;)
Moral: Not getting sand in your rig: priceless

Thanks for the input Ref. I totally forgot about my tripod. If you hadn't mentioned it...I'd probably forget to take it!
Oh and the bolded part...thanks...and yes, yes I am! :p

lol. you are sick. I love it. Too bad no one in my family has a camera except my sister with her A520.
we can assume you either got eaten by a giant lizard in the everglades or lost in a super-walmart if you don't return by __________
