I heard a rumor that it might be possible to download RAW files into the latest iPod. Not to view, simply to store. Anyone heard of this?

iPods are slow for that kind of thing. Try a Hyperdrive80 instead.

I went to the Hyperdrive site; that is one sick little puppy. It will definitely come in handy in the field. Do you know if there is a similar device that would let you see thumbnails or the like? Now that would be awesome.:D

Yes but...
One that will show thumbnails will cost a lot more because of the screen.
Also one with thumbnails will need to be replaced when the next camera that takes RAW images comes out as the RAW files are incompatible with each other.
For storing and viewing...top of the line...

But, there are literally hundreds of these type devices on the market with various features at various price points...

For storing most types of images/files, you should be able to use any portable device that supports USB-OTG (on-the-go). Basically, with USB-OTG, a device act's as the host and you can plug your camera into it like you do for transfering to your PC. The iPod doesn't supposr this out of the box, although I believe there are a few accessories which allow this. I do know however, that the Cowon iAudio X5 has this feature, although I doubt you can view the RAW images.
Anyways, what I do is bring a laptop with me when I travel, that way it's easy to trasnfer your files over and you can view them on a nice big screen, although I understand this is not nearly as portable...so yeah.

iPod is music first. always. Get something like that Epson photodrive or w/e it is. there are also third party storage drives with built-in card readers for the same purpose of transfering info.
