This is just a little picture of some of the more common problems that result in the E18 error.

If you look close at the white gear you can see debris in the teeth. Dust can easily get in these small micro teeth and cause just enough of a hang to error the unit. This is a sony cybershot P200 but the unit is the same as the canon. It works the same and has almost identical gears. This just happens to be one im working on now and i wanted to show what we are dealing with. Some of the teeth are as fine as a hair.

This isnt the only thing that can cause the E18 errors, but this is some of the most common.

Well they try to cover the gears but debris can still get into the machine threw the lens. The way the telescoping lens works it can retract debris into the mechanism then eventualy work its way into the teeth of the gears. They have taken measures to prevent it but it can still happen.

But if we install a 58 mm with a filter always attached the chances to get debris into the mechanism will be minimal right?
