We just got a Canon S2 IS @ Christmas time and now that track season is upon us we see that we need more of a zoom lens. The standard lens is okay, but we would love to step up to something a little better for the running shots and across the track shots. Any suggestions? Thanks alot.
You might want to take a look at the Panasonic FZ30. Like the FZ20 that I have, it has a 12 times optical zoom.

Is that an additional 12x on top of the 12x that the S2 IS already has. Sorry, but we are new to the digital camera thing. Thanks for any insight. What type of adapter do we need for a telephoto lens?

ummm.... the s2 is also "12x" and has a zoom range of 36-432mm while the fz30 has a range of 35-420mm
n2rottz: jeff's review has a list of accessories for the s2 including the teleconverter and required adapter:

You may just want to try to get closer. 432mm is a LOT of zoom. I found myself using about 200mm most of the time when I shot cross country at the high school for the local newspaper. That's half of what you have, and I was getting full body photos. See if you can get up to the fence. Sounds like you're shooting from the stands. If not, just get them when they come around to your side instead of trying to get them from across the entire stadium/field.

Sorry, I was not aware that your camera had a 12 X zoom. I find that over 12 X I need a tripod, and that it is hard to follow the action.
