View Full Version : 4 gig sd card in an A620?

Has anyone tried it as Canon say 2 gig is the max but I know some cameras will take more than the Mfg's "Max" capacity cards.

I've read not to format bigger cards in the camera though, doesn't work for some reason.

Don't want to buy one and only be able to use 2 gig of it.

Anyone know for sure?

Thanks for any advice,

Steve.

You can abosultely use ALL 4GB of memory and perform a "regular" format of a 4GB card in the A620, but (there's always a but) you can not low-level format a 4GB card in the A620. This would only be an issue if the card got corrupted some how and could only be reapired by doing a low-level format (corruption can happen...rarely).

So, you have to decide whether the risk is worth it. I am willing to accept the risk and have been using a 4GB Transcend SD card in my S2 and SD500 for months without issue.

JTL, thats perfect, thanks.

Iv'e been wanting to know for a long time!

I normally low level format cards on my PC after transferring files anyway so thats unlikely to be a problem unless something goes wrong and I don't have access to a PC.

I will always have spare cards though.

4 gig card on it's way.

Steve...

I have never tried a low-level format on the PC and then tried to use the card in the camera (since it works the way it is, I was afraid of screwing it up!). I'd be very interested to know if this works! I guess it should, because even though the camera can only create a FAT16 partition, it obviously can read and store files on a card with a FAT32 partition...

Well, let us know what happens! :)

I will report back when the card gets here, will probably be a couple weeks.

Thanks for the help,

Steve.

Got the card, works perfectly.

I should be able to format it on the PC but won't try just yet, just in case!

Yeah, sure, probably.

I can only assume so.

Get one anyway, if it won't work, sell it on eBay again.

Im sure it would work though.
