I got a new R230, with its 6 ink cartridges. I've been printing only B&W, which I assume only uses the black one. The ink levels indicated in the Epson printing window that comes up when I print indicate that *ALL* the ink levels are falling at the same rate. Does this mean I'm going to have to buy ALL SIX cartridges when the black one runs out of ink?

thanks,

Hi John,

What I'm about to tell you is not necessarily true or false. My professional opinion is based on self-experience and feedback from my Epson clients.

From what I understand, Epson programs there printer cartridge chips along with the printer's firmware. Epson printer cartridges are designed to let the printer know when it reaches a certain percentage on low ink.

Approximately 13-27% is when the printer lets the consumer know there is a need for changing all color cartridges including black. Although you may have only used the black, the rest of colors are looked upon as "one" overall cartridge.

This in itself forces individuals such as the end user to buy a brand new or compatible set of individual ink cartridges. If you're looking to save on money, compatibles are good only if your fully aware of the chmicals being used from whoever your third party supplier is.

Let's just say your printing mainly photos then genuine Epson ink is a good choice. Make sure you find a reputable wholesaler who can save you a few bucks on your original Epson ink.

The important thing to do, is always ask the sales representative about the cost effectiveness on the ink supplies before purchasing the actual printer. You could find yourself saving lots of future expenses.

To Your Epson Savings Success,

Joseph
