And it seems pretty sharp wide open. JPEG on neutral settings (parameter 2), and not with Don's nicely calibrated XT but with my not yet calibrated 350D.

I say nice too. I've gotten sharp results with my EF-S WA also. Haven't done any real test like yours but from the wide open shots I've taken its been very pleasing.
Thats a very good WA lens, almost purchased it before getting the Canon.

Nice stuff Cold One! I'm sold on that lens now more than ever...now I just need to figure out whether it's a body upgrade or that lens next...oye!

It is a nice lens, but you have to be able to live with the CA. Else you are better off with the Canon EF-S 10-22. The Sigma 10-20 vignets over the entire range, even stopped down.
It has great build quality, vignetting is best in class (the above photo is as bad as vignetting gets... 12mm f4), no distortion to speak of above 15mm or so. And very contrasty and sharp...
