Over at Adorama they sell used Tokina lenses and rate them according to their condition. They are quite cheap and appear to be a good deal for people like me just getting started w/ several lens w/o breaking the bank. What do you think?

Well, not all Tokina lenses have a good reputation. Just like all manufacturers they do have a few that are better than the rest.

It is a bit hard to know what lens to go for, it just requires lots of study, and you can not really say that a certain lens is good just because it is from a certain manufacturer.

Some sites that give you some user experiences:
www.fredmiranda.com (under reviews)
www.photographyreview.com
www.photozone.de

And on here you can of course ask opinions on lenses that are in a certain range. So, if you have specific questions about certain lenses, you may be able to get opinions here.

Thanks for the links. I plan on getting a 30D in about 6 mos. I'm moving there from a Canon G5. I was going to get the 17-85 IS as a decent all around starter lens but comment here have made me wonder if that's a good choice. The cost of the 17-85 is the limit for my budget at the moment. I'll look around this site more for opinions on various lens choices and, of course, any suggestions from you.
