View Full Version : Questions about the digital rebel xt (350d)
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could let me know whether the depth of field preview button can stop down the aperture for the whole shoot, or if the aperture will automaticaly go back to wide open after a shot.
I would also like to know if the mirror lock up option locks the mirror up for as long as you choose or if, for some reason, it doesn't.
Thanks

DOF preview button is used on a per shot basis. it resets.
The MLU function is turned on via a custom function setting and it requries one full depresison of the shutter button, that locks the mirror up then another is required to take the shot. And so goes every shot there after until you turn it off via the same custom function setting.

BTW, it works nicely with the 2-sec timer. Only one press needed: the mirror lifts at the beginning of the timer and the shutter is released at the end.
Poor man's cable release (Man those things are pricey!).

Wow I didn't know that at all. . . might have been useful before I got my RS60.
BTW.
DOF preview is a joke. Because the lens is wide open to begin with you have to stop it down to see a difference, like to 5.6 or maybe even 8.0. then the whole VF gets darker. . . I'm not all together sure why it was offered on the XT. the viewfinder is way too small.

The only time I use the DOF preview button is when I have the 580EX mounted to the camera. The bright strobe scares people. :)

Stupid question time...
How do you get a 2 sec timer on the 350? All I can do is 10. When I shoot art, I use it to eliminate vibration. 2 second with MLU would be a time saver. I generally shoot art late at night after painting, when I am tired and impatient. The s400 little thing I used to have had a convienent choice of 10 or 2 second timer, which made avoiding camera shake a piece of cake.
Thanks,
Clyde
Thanks for the information

Mr MoneyBags up there has a 1D. I don't think the XT has 2 seconds like the high dollar cameras do.

I just checked. In Tv mode I get 30 seconds.

The XT's timer is only a 10 second timer. It can not be changed.
You can take exposures up to 30 seconds long Rhys. If you want longer exposures you will have to use the bulb setting. . . you control the lenght of the exposure. . .

We are not talking about exposure time... but about delay till exposure time.
And in bulb mode you can get exposures longer than 30 secs.

Don't know about the Rebels but I do believe the 30D has a 2 sec timer when you use mirror lockup combined with the self timer. I found the selftimer far too long when you simply want to avoid camera shake on a tripod but simply tested it using mirror lock and 2 sec sounds about what it does. Very convenient indeed for tripod shots, did a great moon shot that way.
So Rebel users, I'd say give it a try, set self timer and mirror lockup and see what it does... I'm curious whether the 20D does this too?

You folks are right. Setting the MLU function trumps the 10 second self timer and resets it to 2 seconds.

Oh dear, I misread and therefore totally misunderstood cwphotos point... Now I know where I had seen the 2 sec delay. I was going through the memu of my 350D last saturday trying to find how to set it... I had read about it before and actually used it once! *blushing smiley icon thingy*
Thanks, cwphoto, karin and aparmely!

You couldn't have answered any better. First off, enough folks said "can't be done" that it clearly wasn't a stupid question, then y'all answered the question.
While it won't prevent genocide in Sudan, or even keep the Rockies above .500, it will prevent needless pacing around, and I will think fondly of the DCRP crowd when shooting art.
Thanks,
Clyde
