Without setting foot outside my door to do so, I wanted to see just what my EOS 20D would look like married up with an EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM .

OMG! Now this is some heavy-duty shootin'... with the emphasis on the heavy.
With just the lens and the BG-E2 Battery grip... we're weighing in at 59 (lens) + 24 (20D) + 16 (BG-E2) + 5 (two battery packs) = 104 oz or 6.5 lbs. Whoa! That's straining the old neck strap, to be sure. That just can not be good for a person. Talk about a millstone... uggghh :p

haha, that's pretty big.
too bad the lens sucks.
hey the bh specs for the grip is only 10.2oz
size-wise the 28-300 ain't all that different than a 70-200 and is only about .8lbs heavier.
walking around with the 70-200 f2.8 + 1.4x TC (.78 lbs) + XT + sigma flash (11.8oz) + 4 nimh batteries isn't that bad at all. you get over it real quick. a 300 f2.8 might start to get a little awkward though.

Ouch. I think you'll find it measures up well against it's peers...
...oh, wait - what peers?!

I apologize for the error, if that is the case. I had a heck of a time locating specs, since they are not posted on the Canon-USA site. I pulled them off some retailer's specs. They did not state if a pair of BP-511s were included... or the 5x AAs or nothing at all.
SO... for the sake of argument, lop off 5 ounces!
That still seems like a heck of a total camera weight for shuttling around. Add a 580EX flash and then where are we? 7lbs?
I can just see me offering this "big rig" to my photography professor... who weighs all of 110 lbs. (soaking wet). She complained with just the Tamron 18-200mm (14oz) slapped on. Adding the Tamron 1.4x Teleconverter... still would only add another 7 ounces to the rig.
That's 21 oz (Tamron solution) vs 59 oz (Canon behemoth)... for about the same range. Okay... we're a wee bit darker and you can't shake it as much... but still, a full 2 1/2 lbs lighter. I can't say I'd stick my neck out for it. :D

Try Bigma plus XT plus grip plus 2 Canon batteries plus 580EX flash plus 4 AA batteries plus another 15lbs on your back. I did that at the track quite a bit.
That Canon 28-300 would be the ultimate PJ lens on a 1 Series.

I still have to get used to the weight of the 30D + 70-300 IS... Walking around with that for an hour, my wrist started complaining.
