View Full Version : Does SD card speed affect camera speed? (50x vs 133x)

I'm about to purchase a 2GB SD card for my new Canon SD630, but I'm having trouble deciding which one I want to buy. I can get a 50x card for about twenty bucks less than a 133x card, and I'm just wondering if I'll really see a difference in speeds while I'm taking pictures, video, or scrolling through pictures on my camera. Is it REALLY worth the extra twenty to get that 133x card, or will the only time I notice a difference be when I transfer pictures/videos onto my computer (and NOT notice a speed difference on my camera)? I'd really appreciate your input.. Thank you!

Can't address your camera specifically, but there is absolutely no difference in camera performance with either a standard (blue) Sandisk 512mb or a 1GB Corsair 133x rated in my Nikon D50... and I can transfer either card when full to my computer in less time than it takes to go downstairs and fix a cup of coffee...

Won't matter in a P&S camera. dSLRs make use of the high speed cards more...and even they rarely show performance differences between 50x cards and 133x cards. It's transferring the pics to the computer via a card reader where the super high speed shines.

Awesome, that's exactly what I needed to know! Thanks for the quick replies. I ended up getting a 2GB SD 50x for $41.99 with no tax (except in CA) and UPS 3-day shipping is $4.81. I'd say this is one heck of a deal... in fact, I'm going to post it in the Deals forum now. :)

Enjoy! It's only a weekend special!

Well I'm about to buy a P&S Panasonic Lumix FX01 and in the review from this website it says the camera takes advantage of high speed sd cards. So then would 50X and 133X make a difference now?

No. It's usually approximately 40x in most cameras. Anything faster than that is usually overkill even in a digital SLR and the benefits are usually reaped on the card reader, not in the camera.

Becareful with the larger SD memory ive seen many reports around the internet about fakes. People are using 512 or really really cheap SD memory and relabeling it. Some have claimed to have 1gig and it only formats 512 and some have reported memory errors.

Very true, although that usually only occurs on those online grey-market digital camera stores or other shadey-looking/feeling websites. I'm 100% certain that Newegg is trustworthy enough to buy absolutely anything from. I'd never buy an SD card off eBay or another website I've never heard of. If you're unsure, go to resellerratings.com - it's plain and simple, if the online store you're looking at has a bunch of "Very Dissatisfied" ratings (like over 50% of online digital camera-only stores), then don't buy from there.

EDIT: Looks like that weekend sale is over... it's now back up to a WHOPPING $43.99. :)
