Let me start off by saying I'm in way over my head, or feel like I am with this S2 IS. I've put more time into reading these forums and suggested links (morguefiles) and I'm trying to comprehend. I appreciate any responses in an effort to get my brain to grasp this stuff.

So i've reviewed the suggested settings and my confusion over TV mode versus AV mode is still blurry but what really throws it off is the Safety Shift. It is suggested to use Safety Shift so therefore if you go to take a shot in AV or TV mode the camera automatically changes whatever setting is wrong (AV it change aperture, right? and TV is changes shutter speed). So if we are letting the camera auto change these settings why aren't we just using AUTO mode?

Can you also clarify my simplification of TV and AV. If I need to control the amount of light I use AV and if I need to capture movement I need TV, right?

I really do appreciate replies, it is not comfortable feeling this lame but I promise I'm trying to grasp.

I know how you feel. WHen i first got mine i felt the same way. There are alot of settings and features you wont use though.

I remember it like this, AV = Apature value, and TV = Time Value so with those 2 you get to play with some settings but the camera is kinda helping you learn whats needed.

Im not even sure what safety shift is. I see it in the manual but i dont know how to turn it on or see anything else about it.

Im still new at it also so i use auto when i quickly want to take a shot. Its in manual most of the time just because im trying to learn it. When its in auto i kinda test myself, ill guess what i think it should be then his the button and look and see if it choses what i would of.

Maybe an example of safety shift would help. You see a shot and you want to shoot in TV of 1/60. You proceed to press down the shutter halfway and your S2 says "wait a sec, to get the exposure right and with a TV of 1/60, AV would need to be over 8.0 (the maximum that the S2 can handle). And since you said safety shift on, you granted me the power to adjust your TV and AV choices to 1/3rd of a second and 8.0"

Had you not had safety shift on, your S2 would have left you at 1/60 and 8.0 and an underexposed picture. But hey, maybe that's what you wanted. The safety shift lets you decide who gets the final say.

The thing I don't understand about safety shift is when I'm in AV and have my aperture at 2.7, why the S2 doesn't push TV beyond 1 second? Seems to defeat the purposes of safety shift.

cpm440vee : I think you said, in effect, that if you lock one of the exposure/shutter pair and try to take a picture with safety shift on the camera will try to adjust the other one of the pair to expose the picture correctly but if that one has maxed out and the exposure is still off then it will adjust the one you locked - yes ? If I got it right, thank you for the explanation :)

BowerR64 : "TV = Time Value" Oh of course - here's me been thinking for years now (seriously, ever since I got my A40!) that it was TV because if you want to take a photo of a tv screen you need to control the shutter speed :D

I know it should be SS = shutter speed, or SV = shutter value.
