I want to buy new lense to use with my Pentax *ist DL. I'm thinking about either Tamron 28-200mm(f3.8-5.6) and 18-200mm (f3.5-6.3) but do not know exactly which one is better in picture quality and peraation. Can anyone advise?

Also want to know comparion among Tamron, Tokina, Sigma for 18-200mm

Thank,

Rhys

I think you might find 18-125 (made by SIgma) is generally a better range. Beyond that and you'll probably need image stabilisation.

the sigma 18-200 DC is the best bargain, sharper than the others except the tamron 18-200 which is a little sharper at the tele end but bigger distorsion at wide end.
even the 18-125 DC is worthy, but not quiet at all.

The consensus seems to be that in this range sigma is the better choice. Either the 18-125 or 18-200 make a great all purpose range for a cropped dslr. That is to say, since the pentax has a 1.6 crop for effective focal length, most people find a lens that only goes as wide as 28 (x 1.6 = 45) isn't wide enough for them.

As for image stabilization, people went without for decades. The 18-200 is an all purpose lens. If you find you need something more specialized, you can buy something else later. Even then, you may find the general lens stays on your camera most of the time.

Good Luck,

Clyde

I got excellent Tamron service experience, but in Singapore. My front focusing lens replaced immediately with a new one when I walk in to their office, even that my warranty card isnt filled, nor mailed, and I also lost the receipt. Nice service!

and just my opinion on ppl went decades without IS....

We use film for decades too, aren't we? But now we use digital. Why? Because it makes life easied, so do IS, it make life easier ;)

-We also use letters for decades, but then now we use email as well

no offense, just my bit of thought

Personally, I am kind of sold on the Tamron AF18-200 F/3.5-6.3 Di II LD for that size lens. Like capedeci, it is my main "snatch and grab" utility lens for the camera.

Recently, I made a move to go to a Tamron SP AF28-105mm F/2.8 LD, but it is a much more expensive and heavier lens. It's due in next week and I will take a bit of time to evaluate it, but for the money EITHER the SIGMA version of the 18-200mm or the TAMRON will be truly good choice.

There have been excellent reports coming back on the SIGMA, also. Never having shot through it... I can't say.

Good luck with whatever lens you choose. :D

I hv the Tamron 18-200 and I'm happy with it. For the price I pay, I think it's worth it. Do hv a look at my gallery. All taken using this lens. http://www.pbase.com/tsbok/taman_negara & http://www.pbase.com/tsbok/bagan_lalang
Hope this helps. :)
