View Full Version : Circles on wall with tz1 shots, see pictures
There are circles on the wall when I used the flash on my TZ1. My wall is painted with Satin paint. I would say maybe 2 out of 10 shots would get it (at the same angle to te wall). I tried my SD450 and FZ20 and I did see it with the Canon SD450 as well. The big deal is I only saw it twice on the SD450's 60 shots or so. My question is why I don't see it with the FZ20 and only saw twice on the SD450 on over 60 shots but saw it on the TZ1 2 out of 10 shots or so. Some shots even showed 3-4 cirlcles, and circles moved from shot to shot.
I love the TZ1 for the zoom and image stabilizer. Outside shots are very good. Indoor shots with low lights are good but the cirlces worry me. By the way, Circuit City is great....they gave me another TZ1 to try....but same old circles. May have to take the 15% return hit if circles are issue.
Look at the pictures (upper right area of lamp ). I had to shoot in low megapixel so I can post it here (sorry). Anyone have any explaination?

We frequently would get these with our S230 that is now pretty old. I thought that the explaination for it was either dust or reflections in the optics. It was more or less always with flash if I remember correctly. Sorry I cannot be more specific, but I think that's it.
Maybe it has it do with the flash placement and reflective surfaces or objects that you shoot. I.e. the flash in your case is reflected back to the camera pretty sharply on the speaker or such and creates the refkection/dust circle?

I'd say it's lens glare causing by back lighting or light reflecting off shiny surface.

Want another guess? If its only in shots with the flash .....it is dust...maybe in/on the lens but most likely in the air.
If you are using a filter, try with out one.
I would inspect the lens very closely for marks or dust......the first time you wipe a lens it is very difficult to get it clean.
I have seen that many times and it was dust in the air...but there is almost more than 1 circle like that.....consider that and experiment....
But I can see that perhaps, that thing on the wall may be causing the reflection.
You have ghosts. Get out now. http://theshadowlands.net/ghost/orbs.htm
Thank you for all of your opinions. This is a second TZ1 already. I showed Circuit City the pictures and the sales person said maybe dirt inside the lense and exchanged the camera volunteerly. This second unit is doing the same thing. I suspected it was from reflection of some sort but what trouble me is why my FZ20 and my Canon SD450 do not have this same reflection (actually, the SD450 did it 2 times out of about 60 shots from the same position as the TZ1). I have already tried cleaning lense with the cleaning kit I bought from Ritz Camera---no help. Is this something I am going to have to live with?

How about if you turn around and take that photo.....
Have you every been watching TV and see ghosting or flaring or CA and that is with a $50,000.00 camera and professional cameramen...some cameras just handle different situations differently.
If its an isolated situation why worry about it.....if that was a special photo it is easily fixed.

Check to see if there is anything in the room, outside of the camera viewing area, but illuminated by the flash that could reflect to the wall, like glass or metal ornamentation.

It's just dust, nothing you can really do about it.

don't worry about it, go take 60 photos of something else and have some fun! your wife will probably delete the pictures you take of your wall anyways :D

My conclusion is to not use the flash while taking shots of a wall painted with Satin paint. Sorry, couldn't resist. I feel for you but I love my TZ1 so far. I didn't expect a perfect camera for $349 but I certainly enjoy what I bought.

Thank very much. This put me at ease. Most of the shots with this 10x zoom will be outdoor anyway.
