Found some real wildlife in my inner suburban backyard - couldn't believe it. This is a stumpy lizard, about 2" thick and a foot long.

Sweet. That is an excellent photograph in every respect. I'm jealous of the shallow depth of field. 90mm macro?

Thanks. Tammie 90mm macro on F8.
I'd rather a bigger DOF but I had it set shallow to disguise the ground (which is brick pavers).

Just shows you - that is quite a shallow DOF at F8 - that's macro for you.
I understand that the Tammie is best only up to F8 and gets less good thereafter - is that your experience??
Great image - the shallow DOF suits it well

Evocative Martyn, clever framing too.
Geoff, I'm not really clever enough to give good advice on lenses. I really like it. I just go with what others recommend here mostly. The wasp shots everyone loved of mine were all F/16 and you can't fault them for sharpness even at 100%.
I don't know how others get good DOF at 1:1 macro, I can never seam to get enough DOF when making little stuff big. Don't know if I'm missing a trick.

Not sure If I've got enough contrast on the lioness (shot through fencing).
Not sure if the mercat is bright enough (I may have gone too crazy with curves).

Nice colors and very cute model and expression!
Last Friday we went in the forrest of Natural park Comana near Bucharest to shoot some birds. We find none so lazy to get captured, so we shot some
frogs instead. I present you Mrs. and Mr. Frog!

Thank you ... I'd be happy to have a large well designed and kept zoo in or close to Bucharest. As you know, it IS difficult to shot wildlife in suburban areas, even if they are Natural parks with forrest. Of course, I am not speaking about frogs or squirrels ... :)

I can shoot a wild Kangaroo, Koalla, seagull, pigeon, honey eater or Rosella any day. I simply could not find a frog to save my life, and there aren't any squirrels in Australia. Funny how whats common in one part of the world is a real treat for someone on the other side of the world to see. Thats one thing I like about this thread.

04-21-2009, 05:08 AM
I guess shoot what you're presented with. A green lawn backdrop would be preferable but if the little fella won't stand on one.
You could try blurring the background in photoshop or the equivalent if you have the software. Mask the squirrel and paint a blur on the top portion of the background.
I still like it as is. Squirrels are much more photogenic than the possums we have that fill the same niche.

Thanks guys,
For some reason, the combination of the 50-200 and the ec 14 exhibits a goofy bokeh when the background consists of mainly thin, lightly colored intertwining lines... it could be photoshopped but it's not nearly as objectionable when printed ;)
This was shot at almost the same time and settings, a little less light in the shade but the background appears normal.

Hi Phill - sorry, I was fiddling with my user settings - can you see my photos in this thread now? Or try my my album:
http://www.dcresource.com/forums/album.php?albumid=30
There are red squirrels all over the Island, especially in the grounds of Osborne House. Seeing one up close is a bit hit and miss, - sometimes I can wait for 3 hours and see nothing. :(
Try tempting them with hazelnuts or pine nuts, and if they get close enough to sniff them out, they will probably come back for more :)
They tend to have a pattern of burying 5 or 6 nuts, then they will stop to eat one (usually with their back to you!). They will also sneak up behind you for food, and are incapable of doing anything in a straight line!
Good luck - I hope you see some when you are down here!

Just thought of some other places you might see red squirrels on the IOW:
Parkhurst Forest
The car park and adjacent picnic site is the start of the two themed trails, taking the walker along pleasant contrasting routes through the forest. The entrance can be found approximately 1 mile west from Newport on the A3054 towards Yarmouth. I think there is a squirrel hide here too.
Rylstone Gardens
Traditional cliff top gardens with a tea room near the old village Shanklin.
Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve
The ‘Trail of Discovery’ passes through the water meadows of the Eastern Yar and woodland. The circular walk takes 40 minutes. The walk passes a 2 storey bird hide overlooking the marshes and a pond. Red squirrels are normally seen here. The trail starts at a footpath 100m south of the river bridge in Alverstone Village.
Robin Hill Country Park - possibly a squirrel hide here, although I haven't visited for ages!
Good luck!:)

Took this one today - bit disappionting as I wasn't really close enough, and I'm still fiddling with settings on my new camera. Also this little vole took 2 hours to show up, and the exact moment when my batteries died, he jumped up on top of the log, played the bagpipes, did a riverdance, and then stole 2 large hazelnuts!

Great shot Purity. Looks almost like one of those little garden statues.
Not really sure if this counts as wildlife, but I know they are not insects. I was on a hike today and tested out the LED illumination built into the Olympus 1030SW super macro mode. The image is a little noisy, but the LED gives pretty even lighting up close. He was about 2 inches long and 2 inches from the camera.

We've been photographing that doe since she was born in 2004. Sadly her twin brother disappeared, to my knowledge no one has seen him since November of 2005. She is often hard to find in summer as she lives in a riparian area with a lot of brush and high grass but during fall and early winter she's very dependable and somewhat habituated to photographers due to her "celebrity" status as an extremely rare color phase.

Lukas,
Yosemite is a mixed bag, but has great potential in the Winter. This was my first Winter visit. December is not normally a predictably snowy month based on my research. This past week was an exception as they got ~6 inches Tuesday. I was worried as the trend was warming for my weekend visit. Indeed it rained much of Saturday, but by 10PM it turned to snow. It actually snowed too much Sunday; at least another 6 inches and it made for tough hiking. The clouds stayed close to the valley floor and I got only a few good shots. Monday was bright and sunny. But by then I was rushed and had to leave before the magic hour at Tunnel View. I will post a few on the old Yosemite thread when I have a bit more time. I did put a couple up on the Olympus DSLR forum. I have yet to master those Singh-Ray ND grads at your level.

Thank you all for the comments on the squirrell photo.
Looks like all squirrells around here use the same beauty saloon ...
Kgosden - nice an ddifficult capture, I would have liked a litle more light on the head and the neck, maybe some photoshop would do.

MaggieMay please try to post only images that you have resized to ~800 pixels wide. These huge ones really mess up everyone's ability to view the site.

Yea, that's a good one to remember. In any event, that first (large!) shot is pretty cool. And with a little point-and-shoot? Nice. Was it from a car?

I'm so sorry about the size of the pictures guys. I thought I had this figured out yesterday.....
I am using a Kodak Easy Share Z710. The running antelope shot was taken from a vehicle. I wasn't driving though! :) Hopefully I will get my first DSLR sometime next year.

Nice job MaggieMae, wish I had happened to look before you resized them all to such a small size. Oh well, can't make everybody happy.

Nope, he's just an apprentice to be!
The one who struggles with the controls and try to learn about CLS is myself (lol) ...

Evening all.
Some much admired squirrel shots in this thread - Great poses devin and GabrielC!!
I've been out with the camera over the past 2 weeks soaking up the Spring atmosphere.
These have been cropped and resized. Not great quality, but fun to look at!:)

It's a small rabbit (cottontail?), probably about three weeks old. There was a nest with four of them in our yard, all of which have stayed close by so far.
