Sandisk Ultra II 2 GB card - currently around $79.

Nothing larger than 2GB. The camera cannot low-level format anything larger. It can write to larger cards and utilize them, but you could be toast if you needed to do a low-level - so not recommended.

Nothing slower than 60X-66X - The Ultra II meets that specification. If you get something slower you will have issues in "burst mode shooting" with the save time.

Don't buy the Ultra II Plus (the one with the USB connector) it isn't compatible.

Hope that helps!!

I would suggest you get the fastest (150x +) and the best SD card: you'll thank yourself every time you use the camera and the difference in price is not worth lmiting yourself to 60/66x.
Good luck.

The S2/S3 series of camera cannot take advantage of anything faster than 60-66X speed, period. You won't be limiting yourself at all - it is impossible!!! Unless, you are buying the card with the possibility of using in something else, don't waste your $$$. And don't think years down the road, either - 2GB will be like 128MB is now, useless.

Being a newbie to the S2 IS myself I too wondered the same and ended up buying 3 different 1 gig cards. The first card was Ridata 150x (I thought faster would be better too), then I bought a SanDisk Ultra II 1GB card and lastly another Ridata but this time the Ridata Gold 66x 1 gig card (after reading more on these forums) all have performed great for videos and pictures, all can be formatted in camera and all were under 45.00 each shipped. Newegg.com for Ridata and Buy.com for Sandisk.

I use a 2Gb sandisk Ultra II Card and a 1 Gb Kingston SD Card.Though the 2Gb is fast and the 1Gb is not I have not noticed any particular difference. Both are fine for pics and movies .

A-data 4g card works fine in my S2 IS. This is a cut and paste from another forum that I posted to recently::)

"Tested the card in my Canon S2 IS. Shot 50 full res jpgs at high speed with no buffer flush delay at the end. 5 minute video at 640 x 480 30fps required about 6-7 seconds to flush the buffer. I could have shot longer but these tests were just to get a general idea that the card is more than adequately fast enough for my camera and my ax. "

You might consider buying multiple 512 meg cards instead of 1g or more cards. If you travel and fill up cards pretty fast it is pretty easy to find a photo lab that will transfer all of your images onto a CD, CD's only hold 640-700 megs so one 512 can easily fit onto one CD. If you get the one gig or more than you have to divide it up in some way. It is easier if you use the 512. This is just an idea.
