According to a post (http://www.flickr.com/groups/d70/discuss/72057594088273160/) on the D70s Flickr discussion group, there may be a $100 price drop in the D70s on April 1.

No one taking part in that discussion has confirmed this, but if you're thinking of buying the camera today, it might be worth waiting until tomorrow to see whether or not this takes place.

Holy @$#@! It happened! B&H just dropped their body-only price by $100. A week ago, I added it to my cart @ $799. Now it shows $699.

Sweet!

The D80 is coming... the D80 is coming!

At $699 the D70s is now on the phase-out/clear-inventory list. The D80 will be here before Photokina, probably July/August announcement September/October delivery.

A D70s with an 8MP sensor (I'm guessing CCD). The D70s will be phased out. The D80 body will sell for $1099. Same great feature set and ergonomics of the D70(s), with 5fps HS mode and selectable 1-4fps LS mode (15 NEF/30 JPEG). A 2.5" LCD will be added.

I have mine on pre-order...;)

Wow, I guess I can stop being tempted by the extra features of the D70s, and just wait for the upgrade :D

Thank God I can't afford it! Otherwise, I'd be pretty upset about the D70s purchase I just made (btw -- woohoo! DSLR, here I come! As George's sig notes, I ain't going back!).

It makes a lot of sense for Nikon to make this move -- the D70s and D50 were too close in price and features.

Please note that this is my own personal rumor, based on a vision I had when fell and hit my head on the corner of my D70. The flux capacitor vision came later...

And, I'm pretty darn sure we couldn't pry that D70 out of your grip even using a set of pliers, it's a part of you now George...;)

It would be hard to step down to a D50 or XT at this point. A D80 (still just a fictitious camera of course) might just make the D70 a back-up/second lens body. Or if things go well, in the future, I will just move on to a D200 later this year or early next year. No big hurry or reason to move on. There is a lot more to the D70 than a 6MP sensor.;)

Having just bought it last Friday from B&H for $699, I'm thinking of calling them up and asking for a price adjustment. Does anyone know a) whether that has a chance in hell of working, and b) if so, what the best way to go about it would be?

The D50 appears to have dropped about Aus$250 this week. It was advertised today by one camera store (with 18-55) for Aus$999.00. Last week the cheapest prices were all over Aus$1200 for the kit.

I tend to think that whoever you get on the phone at B&H will treat you with nothing but contempt, and that's putting it mildly. B&H, best I know, does not offer we'll beat any price guarantee. B&H does have everything, and they do offer respectable prices, and you can trust them. The salient point here is that you can trust them. Can you buy cheaper? I suppose, but it comes down the trade-off of who to trust. I trust B&H.

$577.00 for a kit?

$428.00 just a body?

then the D70s body for... $582.00?

Gosh, it just boggles the mind...

You have a return warranty. Assuming that it hasnt passed, ask them to refund you the difference or send it back and buy it elsewhere.

On a side note:

Actually, I dont mind that I paid $899 body only for my D70s 1 year ago. Looking back on it... the time I have spent bettering my photography skills this last year with my camera has well been worth it and I dont think I can really put a $$$ on it when looking at the then and now price of the D70s.

Also, it is hopefully a trend we see coming that prices will be dropping for future cameras...D80 for $500-700..and the D300 $900-1200 range

I missed my chance -- looks like they sold out their stock and re-raised the price to $699.

But the truth is that, as you noted in the rest of your comment, I don't care. I'm just so happy to have this camera!
