View Full Version : Maxxum/Dynax 5D telephoto lenses: help needed!
Hello everybody,
I'm a newbie  , and I'm planning to buy a Maxxum/Dynax 5D body. My questions:
since I'm interested in nature photography (mainly birdwatching), I'd like to buy a good telephoto lenses kit (I think at least 400mm...) ... what would you suggest?
Any advice about a Walimax 650 -1300 telephoto I found on the internet (low price but quality?)?
PS since I haven't bought the camera yet, I'm open to further suggestions...
(camera + telephoto from other brands - Canon, Nikon ecc... - more or less the same quality and price class...)
Thank you very much for your precious help!!
Max

Lens quality usually follows the price, but it all comes down to what picture quality you find acceptable, how much you are willing to spend, and your shooting style.
Remember that almost all lenses you can use will be affected by the 1.5 crop-factor, so pictures will will look like they came from a lens with a focal length 1.5 greater that what it really was (500mm becomes 750mm etc.)
What is your shooting style? Do you prefer to move around to find "models", or do you sit and wait for the birds to show up? Big/heavy lenses almost always require a tri-pod for maximum quality, whereas lighter lenses can be hand held (some of the time).
Budget. Obviously noone wants to buy a crappy lens, but sometimes we have to compromise. Instead of getting a 600-1300mm lens, maybe you could get a ~200-500mm lens and then use a teleconverter for extra reach. That way you can cover more focal lengths with acceptable quality for less money.Links:

I am hoping to be buying the Maxxum 5D soon, as I have been a Minolta user for years and have a lot of $$ invested in lenses.
My favorite subjects are any sort of wildlife, and especially birds. I've had good luck with my Minolta 100 x 300, f/2.8 - f/5.6 even though it's slow, and I have sometimes added a teleconverter to that. I also use a 400mm Tokina that I've gotten nice results with, but you would definitely need a heavy duty tripod for that one, and I don't know if it will work with the 5D or not.
Good luck in your search. I just hope the 5D is still available when I'm ready to buy it (hopefully by the end of this month).

I have Dynax 5D here, fablous camera I say. I also have Minolta 100-300mm lens from my old Minolta 500si, works well on 5D. Recently bought 2x AF Telephoto converter for my 5D and used 100-300 lens which makes it into 200-600mm times 1.5 which is 300-900mm. Here is one photoshoot I took last night -

That photo of wood pile was approx 30metres from where I was standing and It was hand held - no tripod. So you can get the impression of getting good shots of wildlife.
(oh this photo is un-edited & un-cropped, direct from camera to here)
