New to SLRs and, by default, new to NIKON SLRs as well.
I am looking at a lens which states it is an F mount. So that should fit my new D50. But then it goes on to confuse me (which isn't hard when it comes to SLRs) and says the lens mount is interchangeable "YS" and mentions "pitch" and that the YS "pitch" is the same as "T mount pitch". But if I use it in T mount it will have to be manual.
As long as it is properly described as F mount it will fit my D50, correct?
And the YS and the T are perhaps adapter rings to allow this to fit other cameras? Or older NIKON mounts?
Thanks for any help.

Maybe I am mistaken here, but F mount is a manual lens, and the D50 will be unable to meter correctly though the lens with it too. What lens is it that you are looking at?

Current AF and AF-S lenses are also F mount. F mount only refers to the actual mechanical connection to the camera. I honestly know nothing about YS Pitch and T mount Pitch. So, all I can answer here is check out pages 105 to 108 of the D50 manual. This is the section that talks about lens compatibility. If you find the lens on this list, it will either be compatible, or in the section of the list that specifically excludes it from compatibility. If it is nowhere on the list, then chances are, it is not compatible. In fact, I've heard some very early f-mount lenses may damage the camera or lens if you try to mount them, so be very careful.

Thanks for the info.
It was an old SIGMA macro lens I had seen on ebay, I was debating on what my threshhold should be.
I decided to wait until another recent ebay purchase was delivered, a +1 and +2 nikon lens set for macro that would just screw onto the nikon 18-55 lens which came with the camera. Those work great together and I still get the AF and metering and they only cost $15 (used but perfect shape). I let the other lens go.
