Im thinking about buying a sb 600 flash for my d70s and i would like to know what any owners of the flash think of it... I also heard that you can use it wirelessly without purchasing any accessories for it, is this true? and how far away can i use it and how would i go about setting it up etc....

thank you for your time

Sam

I recently purchased a SB-600 for my Nikon D70s. I can confirm that you can use the flash as a remote with the D70s without any extra equipment with the on camera flash being the master flash. I found it pretty easy to set up and allows some interesting alternatives.

thank you for confirming the wireless use...i take photos of snowboarding and need a flash that can illuminate a subject from a different angle without costing me a fortune...seeing as im only 16 and currently jobless...or "useless" as my parents say haha

i also need the flash to use with my wide angle sigma lense...my on camera flash is not elevated enough and produces a large dark semicircle at the bottom of some photographs because the lense is so big that it gets in the way...anyone else have this sort of problem? im hoping that a hot shoe mounted flash will eliminate this problem

Do you have a lens hood on when you get the black at the bottom? Thats probably the cause for the semi circle. As for the "useless" comment from the parents, youll have the last laugh when youre the top photographer for Sports Illustrated;)

i have the same problem w/ my 28-105mm and the built in flash on the D50, i get a shadow.. so my next purchase is going to be an SB600 or 800..

I would have that problem too with my sigma wa & d50 combo. I thankfully bought the sb600 as part of my camera purchase and couldn't be happier with it. I find that I really don't like my pictures with the on-board flash now.

I will say that it seems like it could be a pretty complicated piece of equipment if you used it to its greatest potential. But to date I haven't used anything other than its default settings. That said, I'm always thrilled with the results (given my composition and exposure settings are good).
