Does anyone own both the Sigma 18-200 and D70 kit len, 18-70? I'm curious how the Sigma compares with the kit len. Since Nikkor 18-200 with VR is still pricey, I figure I might consider the Sigma version.

I don't own any of the 18-200 lenses, but I do have the 18-70. With that said, I think the only lens I would replace my 18-70 with would be the 18-200. It seems to be at least on par with the 18-70 optically. AF-S and VR are worth their weight in gold in my book as well. Just my 2 cents :)

Are you referring to the 18-200 Nikkor or Sigma? I am assuming Nikkor as you mentioned AF-S and VR... I know the 18-70 AF-S Nikkor was a good lens on the D70. Do you know offhand the cost of the Nikkor 18-200 VR and the best place to purchase this lens? I am considering a longer lens and knowing about the odd vingetting of the Sigma may lead me to look at the Nikkor but price difference may determine the final decision...

Sorry I didn't clarify :) I would only replace it with the 18-200 Nikkor. That lens is anywhere from $650-$800 depending on the vendor. It is still rather hard to find though since it hasn't been out long and is in high demand.

All of the reliable internet outlets that I know of are quoting a price of ~$750 for the 18-200VR, but they are all backordered.

Circuit City appear to have it in stock on their website right now, but the price is $900.:eek:

Thats a big chunk higher than the Sigma 18-200 lens but thats what you pay for VR, not sure its worth that much more, being the Sigma is under 400.00
