In connection with my quest for star photography with the FZ30, I have concluded that I need a remote shutter release. B&H says that Panasonic no longer manufactures this item. Does anyone have any suggestions that do NOT involve DIY?
Thanks!

Gene:
You have no concerns about that particular item even though its not OEM? I know I have seen concerns about some of the other items on Ebay (filters and lenses, in particular).

I have the Panasonic one and that one also, they both work the same.
But I would imagine B&H is full of it.
go here and enter DMW-RS1 or VYC0913 and you can order it yourself from Panasonic

So it would seem. Given the relative parity of price, I'll probably go with the OEM equipment. Its a shame, because I can actually go to B&H (live in CT and in NYC a lot) and would have bought the device there. Its actually where I bought my FZ30.

I hear your frustration gwhiz but as a Panasonic owner, it's something that you just need to get used to. Accessories are a matter of being unfairly overpriced (add on lenses) or remarkably unavailable in the retail market (remote sutter releases). Actually, panasonic add-on lenses are both expensive and hard to find.
Aftermarket accessories for panasonic line of cameras have become somewhat of a cottage industry. Luckily, they tend to be very high high quality thinking of Phaylee and Pemeraal to name but a few.
I bought the RS1 remote shutter release directly from panasonic and got lucky and recieved it after only 3 weeks. But I have a wide range of aftermarket accesories as well.
The ironic thing is that this is what makes panasonic, what I consider, the best online photo community. You have a lot of compitent and passionate users that are attracted to the panasonic line and the drought of accessories from panasonic forces us to try different solutions and share information about what works and where to buy it.
