I have a Toshiba PDR-M81 digital. It came with 8 MB smart media card. I have been told my camera is ancient and I am unable to find larger smart media cards. Is this true?

Here are a couple of cards at B & H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=search&Q=&b=0&a=158_1132&a=0&mnp=0.0&mxp=0.0&shs=&ci=1097&ac=&Submit.x=17&Submit.y=7&Submit=Go). They're much more expensive than SD or CF since no one makes cameras for that media anymore. Try eBay for cheaper options.

I can't confirm your camera being ancient :D But there are still smart media cards being sold. You'll have to look harder if you're using the 5V kind though, the one without the notch. Most smart media devices now use the 3V kind. Here's a useful buyers guide: http://www.pickyguide.com/computers_and_software/smart_media_cards_guide.html
I have a toshiba PDR 71 that still works great. My brother in law & niece have the same camera & have found some of the smart media cards on ebay.
