I read in another thread that some SanDisk memory cards are not "supported by Canon". I want to make sure that I'm shopping for the right thing. Which cards do you recommend for Canons, specifically the SD 450?

The Sandisk Ultra Plus SD cards with the "built-in" USB connector are reportedly incompatible. I can assure you that the regular Sandisk and the Sandisk Ultra II series are fully compatible and work wonderfully.

The Sandisk Ultra II 1GB card is currently being sold by Costco for $59. It has a lifetime warranty and operates at 60-66X - plenty of speed, and capacity, for the SD450.

Hope that clears things up for you.

Thanks TampaJim!

I'm planning on buying the Canon today, and I want to be well informed about the going prices for the appropriate memory so that I can defend myself against any accessory hard-sells.

Memory prices seem to just keep falling. Since the trip I'm buying the camera for isn't for another few months, I might just wait and see if I can afford a 2GB card. I've had good experiences with other SanDisk products, and they seem to be highly regarded, so it's good to know that they will work with the camera I want.

Currently the 2GB Sandisk Ultra II card is being sold at Costco for $89. That should give you some idea about that pricing. I personally prefer not to keep all of my eggs in one basket - so I shoot with two 1GB cards.

As far as accessories - about the only thing you need for an SD series camera is memory, an extra battery, a case and a scratch protector for the LCD. I prefer either Lowe Pro or Tamrac bags - I have a digital Elph too and the Canon bag isn't as nice as the "third-party" bags I mentioned.

Here is a link to the site I prefer for screen protectors.

I am sure you will really enjoy the camera!

Jim -

P.S. If you can do so, purchase the camera with a Platinum MasterCard or VISA - it will double your warranty for free. It is a free benefit for Platinum card holders and is honored through the card association. It also gives you a free 90 day "OOPS warranty" against theft, loss and even accidental damage.

Thanks for the tips. I wish I'd checked back before I made the purchase to find out about the warranty thing. I bought Ritz's ESP plan though, and I would have anyway, since I've read horror stories about getting Canon to honor warranties.

I'm currently waiting for the camera to arrive from Ritz (the store, NOT the website), who are shipping it straight to my door.

I should have ordered a screen protector right away, but I'll probably just go down to the local shop and pick one up since I don't want to use the camera without one and I don't want to wait for delivery of another thing before I use the camera.

As for memory, I'm wondering if I hold out for a little while whether the prices are likely to drop significantly. I bought a 512 MB USB flash drive to bring stuff between home and school in October for $50 from Amazon, and I now see the updated 1 G version selling there for the same $. I definitely need the memory for graduation in a few months, but I don't plan on any serious picture taking excursions before then. Of course, it would suck if something crazy happened and I ran out of memory before I was able to document it.

Hmmm.

Well, I made a decision- I don't want to wait to start using my new camera! I just bought the SanDisk 1 GB Ultra II for $59 from Amazon, along with a pack of screen protectors. Thanks for your help!

Are these good cards for my Canon S2?
