I just saw an outstanding comparison of the 50mm 1.4 vs. 50mm 1.8 and the 18-70 at:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1030&message=17035063

The differences are huge!

Does anyone know of a similar comparison with the Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4.0D IF?

Many say the 24-85 AF-S is a better lens than the 2.8-4. I think AF-S is definitely worth the difference in aperture :) I replied to your email by the way!

I second that recommendation of the AF-S version. It's light, sharp and gives great photos.

Sherlock,

Did you go to the URL I posted and see the images of the 50 1.8, 50 1.4 and the 18-70? Did they suprise you?

I see you have a 50mm 1.8 and the 24-85 zoom. Is it the f2.8-4? Have you compared the image quality of the 24-85 f2.8-4 to the 50 1.8?

Sherlock,

I just realized the AF-S is not the f2.8-4. I'd be curious if you have made the comaprison with the AF-S too.

Bluefin,

I actually just received that 50mm last week and the film taken with it is still at the lab :p But sit tight, I'll be getting it later tonight and I'll tell you how it compares :)

And no, the results didn't suprise me. I would expect a $300 lens to outperform a $100 in sharpness, color and contrast just like it does. :p

Hey Bluefin,

I just got the pictures back, and all I can say is WOW! The pictures taken with the 50mm blow my 24-85mm right out of the water. I now feel I know what real I can absolutely recommend the 50mm now. My advice: go get one :p

That's not to say the 24-85mm is a bad lens, its just not in the same league as the 50mm

The combo has been working great for me so far.

Try the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8. Crude focus (no HSM) but nice optics.

Yesterday I ordered 85mm 1.8 and a used 35-70 f2.8.

I may not need the 50mm if the 35-70 performs as well as I'm hoping.

So I should be good to go for Alaska this summer:

D200, D70, 35-70 f2.8, 85mm f1.8, 70-180 macro and the 80-400 vr.

Thanks for all your advice and help......Mark
