both will have good points and bad points, i think i have itinerated a few points already in another thread, you can't go wrong with either really, the S3 and H2/H5 are announced so you may want to look at them
then you will have the hardcore canon or sony people who will tell you their's is better than the other ehehe =P In the end, know that these are still point and shoots so don't expect too much from them
I personally have an S2 and it has performed well to my expectations (thank you everyone in the forums for your help). Take a look at my gallery and you can see what the S2 is like for yourself. You may want to look at people's H1 gallery too to help you decide:

pictures were taken from a wide variety of situations and pushing the limits of this lil camera. I have:
- indoor shots without flash (cathedral - the image stabilisation helped alot here)
-indoor with and without flash (museum, chinese new year lion dance)
-night time pictures with flash (party)
-and the rest are from all around the place, indoors and outdoors, with or without flash.
good luck

they're really similar, either is fine. Canon benefits from swivel LCD, and 0cm macro (not that useful, very difficult lighting)
Sony benefits from larger LCD, cheaper (?)
The different superzooms are panasonic's FZ30 and FZ5/7 and KM Z5/6 and Kodak P850

This is just like debating if duck is more delicious than chicken and vice versa. Personally, I prefer S2 IS but no one has to agree. It's down to personal need, taste, expectation.... and what you consider VALUE FOR MONEY; etc.
Both are very capable cameras.
