No these are not 100% crops, nor are they even controlled test samples. They're just some random everyday-ish kinda snaps at f/1.4 "just to see". All resized to 800 wide or tall and USM'd. I'll do a formal test later tonight or tomorrow but I hafta pick up my nephew shortly, and watch him for a few hours. Focus is fast and accurate and it seems sharp wide open.

The one memory card I opened so far seems nice and fast as well...especially during the transfer to computer via card reader. Haven't tested burst yet.

And for some more semi-scientific-ish but not really testing:

Kyle image as I would normally process, f/1.4, 1/50th, ISO400, with flash:

100% unedited crop:

Also bear in mind he moves and I move and as we all know, the DOF at f/1.4 is extremely narrow.

Just like Christmas morning - new toys are so much fun !!:)

You had me scared for a minute saying you picking up your nephew and the last shot of the plastic bag at a quick glimpse......:D

Another set. Same EXIF as above. Bad angle but good example of the sharpness of this lens wide open. Focus on the eye.

Pretty sweet results! The bokeh is nice isn't it? Open that baby up to 2.0 and its like some have said a 2.0L. :D

Looks to me that you put the soft/sharp worry to bed now. . . she looks like a great copy!

Yep I shot everything wide open "just to see" and there's no front or back focus...on the Aerostar I was focused dead between the o and s. She's not a tack wide open...but like yours more than usable. Focusing itself doesn't seem to be a problem either. I did use flash since I like the results on my nephew but the IR assist didn't have to come on much. I'm pretty darn happy with this one.

Makes me think a lot of those "soft wide open" people either don't know how to use it or expect way too much from a consumer prime.

I'm a bit tired today but I'll run an offical L to prime comparison tomorrow. I have a dang good copy of the 24-70 so it'll probably be pretty close except at f/2.8.

Ooops sorry Mark. Missed your post! I agree...new toys kick major booty! I "met" a girl on onemodelplace.com that I'm planning to shoot sometime very soon. She's no supermodel like the girls Pete seems to be able to consistently pick up, but I just talked to her on the phone a few minutes ago and she seems like an easygoing carefree girl that will make for some nice photos. I'll get to try out my new baby as well as the L glass on her.

Yea I have to agree - nothing wrong with it wide open - higher expectations/improper use? IDK. . . its nice wide open.

Looking forward to the comparisons. Looking more forward to your take on it after a little usage as well.

i think that's it. maybe some people are expecting it to be f2.8 sharp at f1.4  + tons of improper use. it doesn't look so awesome at f1.4 shooting boring test shots of text or whatever, especially next to a f2.8 test shot, but real world photos certainly do not seem soft with this lens IMO.

aparmley, i'm really looking forward to your opinion of the 50 f1.4 compared to the 85 f1.8. the 85 is on my list of future lenses somewhere under the MP-E 65.

Hmm interesting. Thanks for the link. Dunno why I didn't just Google it myself.

Somehow I doubt that lens will ever make it into my bag....
