Woke up to 21 degrees [Farenheight] this morning. Brrr. I wanted to get a sunrise shot of the Lewis and Clark bridge in Alton [pictured below - partially] but I missed it by about 15 minutes.

Took the new 50 and the newer 28-105 out - I haven't really shot much with the 28-105. The bridge photo above was taken with it. This thing is so freakin wide. I'm used to 50 being my widest - which means that I haven't completely broken in my 35 either. . . jesus, what I have I been doing. . . oh ya, its been cold out!
Heres a shot, nothing special, I can't believe all the room I have with the 28-105 @ 28.
Not the best image in the world. . . I underexposed it too much.

The marina by the bridge. . . local wildlife enjoying their beautiful Sunday morning. . .

Right down broadway. . .

Yea, I was pretty much in the middle of street early Sunday morning. . . no body was out. except for nut jobs with cameras!
Stopped the Lincoln Douglas Momument. . .

Heres the Lincoln Statue

I downloaded a "Vintage-Action" and tried it out. I like it a lot.

I also downloaded the Holga Action which Jamie brought to my attention. Its fun to play with. Here is a before and after.

Anyway. I could have spent a lot longer bumming around town and looking for cool shots but I ran into an old historic neighborhood with a lot of victorian style homes for sale and I was like in heaven. . . then nature called and I was back home vacuuming and rearranging the bed room like it had been my plan all along!
I had fun with the new lenses and I hope you enjoyed. . .

Great set Andy. Really creative and visually impacting stuff. I like that Holga Action too, it looks like an old daguerrotype (sp?) print.

Good stuff Andy. Wish my town had things to photograph. Our tallest buildings are 3 stories and the only 2 things that stand out are both on the University campus... their water tower and Old Main steeple (or whatever you call it).
Pretty boring... blech.

You gotta love a PS action that makes images from your $1100 worth of equipment look like they came from a $16 plastic camera :D :D

Now THAT sounds like a challenge! I'll bet if you looked hard enough, you could find some interesting details around town. Try giving yourelf a project. I came across a gallery a couple of years ago where a dude tried to spell out the entire alphabet, finding the letters in everyday objects around town...
OK - stop being lazy Jamie, and find it...:http://www.pbase.com/abbarich/the_alphabet -AND- http://www.pbase.com/abbarich/coloured_alphabet

That's awesome. Maybe I'll be able to make like creative when the 50 arrives. I'm pretty hopeless otherwise. hah.

yea the holga one is fun. I'm most excited about the vintage action, it saves me a bunch of time and I can add a level/curve layer first before I do anything to allow me to tweak if need be. so far Ive been pleased with the effect just running the action alone produces.
Thanks for looking and commenting sherlock.

Pretty boring... blech. -. . . Belch?
I bet that water tower has some bolts on it or chipping paint, ladder, lay down underneath it for a different view. . . something!
But every town has a junk yard - or something close to it! I've been wanting to head over to the one up here but its not in the best of areas, not really many are, but the smaller the town the better the surrounding folk usually, if its a large city those junk yards are in pretty shady areas. But there are a million photos waiting to be taken at those places. . . I bet if you gave yourself enough time to look for photos, you'd find 'em.
I'm trying to teach myself when there isn't a goal, like photograph that person doing this, its hard to come up with ideas, and its best to approach something that may not seem like it could be much of anything to photograph in a type of investigative style and see what you can make up an otherwise dull scene. Its way easier said than done, but its fun to do even if you don't come away with anything you like upon further review. . . its the learning and training your minds eye that happens regardless of good images. I didn't think that any of my images today were really all that strong or catchy or cool, it was just about getting out and trying to find stuff that I thought I overlooked. like that lincoln statue, I never stopped and got out before and noticed that the flag on the grain mill could line up right behind abe. . . I thought it was neat.

Blech, not belch :p
Actually the water tower is this big white plastic covered thing without bolts at all. Very...uhh..modern.
I don't know that we do have a junk place anymore. There was a guy who used to collect it and sell it to a scrapyard I guess but his place has been cleared for a couple years now. Not sure where it goes now...quite possibly direct to whoever would buy his stuff and I have no idea who that is/was.
Not to say there isn't anything to shoot around here...I just haven't been able to find it. Heck we don't even have a square with a fountain like most towns do. The only historical things you'll find are the blue signs that mark a historical location...and most of the actual historical locations are gone or have been renovated.
Getting that flag behind Lincoln was an awesome touch Andy...something I wouldn't have had the foresight to do.

That alphabet gallery was really cool! Maybe I'll have to try that when the weather gets warmer.

Isn't that the truth. I was going to buy the holga from B&H with the polaroid back on it but it was out of stock, I asked for a notification, well I got it. . . "We will no longer being carrying stock of that particular item. Thank you for your interest. . ." Nice! I suppose I'll eventually brave some other online store that I'm not sure of . . . but for now I'll just use the action.

That darn streetlight though. . . I don't think I'll ever be bored enough to remove it - but in the vintage edit, it almost works, it doesn't stand out as much.

I do like the vintage edit better....can you provide a link to the download? I'd like to play with it.

Thanks Peter. He wasn't going anywhere anytime soon, so I the time to choose my background. hehe! Its right smack dab in downtown Alton - the mill was the best BG. IMHO. Anyway thanks for looking.
FYI I couldn't find that link for Don but I sent him the action via E-mail. I thought I found it this morning but the url was no longer good, so that might be the end of the road for this search.
