is 30D worth it?

hi there, im just wondering that if canon 30D is worth for the wait? compare to get a new 20D which is lot cheaper now... i was suppose to change my nikon to canon 350D but ive been wondering if i should go for 20D since its cheaper or wait for the 30D? any advice from canon users?

The 20D is a fine camera and so will be the 30D _ its comes down to whether or not you want the upgraded features. I for one hope to scrap up enough funds to grab me one when they come available.

Had Canon introduced the missing features with the 20D (like they should have) I would probably be shooting one now.

Had the updated or upgraded features of the 30D been available on the 20D when I bought my XT it'd been my choice from day one. I got on the pre-order list at Canoga so hopefully I'll secure one before heading to Yosemite in June.

it depends on your needs, for me, it isnt even worth it to get the 20D over the XT, let alone 30D.

The biggest upgrade on the 30D seems to be the number 3 on the case and the price hike. I have a 20D coming tomorrow thanks to the price drop the 30D being announced. I dont chimp and i dont use spot metering.

A person attending PMA wrote a quick initial opinion of the 30D and had nothing but good to say. He said that it is an incremental improvement over the 20D in every way. Faster, ISO in viewfinder, spot meter, larger lcd, same feel as the 20D...He called it an evolution rather than a revolution. The more I hear I may be tempted to pony the extra $$s to go to the 30D over a close out 20D.

not worth and extra £400 IMHO and as for faster you must be talking about milliseconds, in the real world are you going to notice? To be fair i have never seen a bad review of the 20D so would you have expected the 30D to have been worse? i think not.

A spotmeter is useful but not essential. More viewfinder information is always welcome until it begins to intrude on what you're looking at. There is such a thing as too much eye candy.

Basically, they've put a few more features on in order to match the features available on many of their competitors cameras.

The 30D is marginally better than the 20D but if the two were side-by-side in a shop with the 20D being 5 cents cheaper, I'd save my 5 cents by buying the 20D.

Now if the 30D had emerged able to take 4AA batteries then I'd willingly pay extra for that!

Well I guess I'll chime in on this one too... For me, until the camera's out and I've had a chance to shoot with it, it's hard to say definitively if it's worth the price-premium it will have over the 20D. I have shot with a 5D which has the larger LCD and some of the other features and they're sure nice, but to me not necessarily essential. Frankly I share a lot of people's disappointment that Canon didn't do a more meaningful upgrade. Sticking with a sensor and image engine/processor that had to be developed 3-4 years ago (and I'd probably live with for another 2 years at least if I bought the camera) seems pretty lame to me in an era when electronics advance so rapidly. Also, not upgrading the AF system also seems lame. If the sensor and Digic II processor weren't so good to begin with, then it'd be a no brainer not to upgrade. But since the 20D was probably best in it's class Canon can get away with this relatively minor overhaul and call it a new camera.

I think ulimately if someone is really in doubt about whether the 30D is worth it, the only answer is to try both and then weigh the price differential. Canon didn't make this one easy to decide.

I see the 20D going for £849.99 (Jessops)
and the 30D being pre-sold for £1179.99 (Jessops)
both with the awful kit lens.

In the US, the 20D goes for $849.99 (Ritz)
And the 30D pre-sold for $1,499.99 (Ritz)

I find it interesting that Jessops charges the quantity of dollars in pounds.
Ritz and Jessops are pretty much equal in terms of shoddy service and sharp practices.

It seems that it still pays to get a weekend ticket to America just to buy a camera and a lens.

where did you see a 350 quid 20D? is it BNEW? im currently looking for 20D but price seems bit heavy for me, so ive come back to 350D with some nice lens...do you know where can i get a 350quid 20D?

i'm using 300D,i prefer 20D and buy a new lens with the money then 30D, i dont think i need all the upgrade in 30D
