What do you use for post processing? Photoshop?

Your whites are shifted to the red in a few of those shots, but I find that auto color usually cleans that right up.

Is it possible to bump the shutter speed a little higher, even if it means a little underexposure? Some of them are still a little blurry (puck) and could benefit from a faster shutter.

Otherwise, they are great! I am still trying to get the shop to fix the optical drive in my notebook, so I dont have access to my catalog of images from the WHL over the last few months. When I get that going, I will post a gallery for all to see.

I agree.

phatkid77, you have at least a full stop of light to play with. Try underexposing a few by .6 EV to 1EV. Since deep shadows are not an issue you can quickly and easily recover in PP.

Worth a shot.

Ya gotta love the 70-200 f/2.8 VR. In my opinion, Nikons best.

Glad you could justify it. The CFO on this side says $1600!!! Luckily I can rent it when needed.;)

white into red?? not sure i see it, but what do i know/

would it be that these files are 100kb compared to 3mb...must say something about quality...

unter expose on purpose??? liek -.03EV with the ev button???

i am gunna go shoot a friends kids game in 30 mins, quick response appreciated?

thro wome settings at me and i will try immediately...

those were from the stands, so options were limited..

aslo, by under exposing does this not creat more unwanted noise??

thanks

cory

Absolutely: whenever in doubt shoot RAW at -.3 EV and fix it in Photoshop ;)

Thanks britkev, had a meeting.

cory, like britkev said. Only with the amout of light you had you could probably underexpose by -0.7 EV or even -1 EV. 1 EV doubles your shutter speed.

Take a look at the ice in your second shot...

it has a pinkish cast to it. its a white balance issue, methinks.

EV -1, AND increase shutter speed......sounds like disaster!!!

i will try.....just got in from experimenting....may be cheaper to by the arena new lights LMAO

will post some more in a few..

the RAW idea sounds good, but a little inpractical for printing pics off for the parnents right on the spot, no??

i'd have to think in the penalty box with the SB 800 would increase my options and better pics???
speaking of sb 800, anyone use one under these conditions??? optimal setup??

thanks

EV -1, AND increase shutter speed......sounds like disaster!!!

i

If you're in aperture priority, setting EV-1 will increase you shutter speed: no need to do both - sounds like somebody slept through Exposure 1.01 ;)

Don't you mean decrease your shutter speed? Looks like you ALL slept through it! :D

No, but it is easy to get confused - increasing speed equals faster, resulting in a decreased exposure time... and of course what we call "shutter speed" is really "duration of exposure".

Ohh. We were thinking of differnent terms. My bad :D

if we decrease EV (darker") thus A mode decreases (less light in) shutter speed...equals bad news..

for ease of use i have been shooting in M mode so i can adjust both

and the sleeping thru exposure 101.......im not offended but i am just now learning...never took photography, and aperature, f-stops, exposure, DOF all of this is VERY new to me (bought dec 27, 2005!!)

still having fun

I think George and the others have been saying that if you underexpose by 1EV and then recover it in Photoshop by adjusting the levels you can gain 1 stop in shutter speed without losing too much. Maybe a bit more noise but that's what NeatImage is for.

phatkid77
02-24-2006, 08:51 PM
id have to see it in action to fully comprehend.......id rather get in right in camera however...

ALOT LESS THROWAWAYS WITH THE NEW LENS!!!!

i'll put some new ones in the photo gallery

Yes, but you can easily boost brightness by a stop in post-production, possibly at the cost of a little noise, but nothing too drastic, and gain extra sharpness by using a shutter speed fast enough to freeze the motion in your subjects... ain't nothing you can do to remove motion blur after the shot.

I am glad you are not offended: that certainly wasn't my intent... hence the ;) wink. You do have some very nice results. I was merely suggesting that you should probably spend a bit of time getting to know how to use the wonderful tools you already have before spending more money on extra add-ons like the SB-800 you mentioned. Should keep the wife happier too ;)

already have the 800....its damn sexy too....lol

if just like to try and capture the photo right...then PP if need be, for when i work with my buddy and time is of the essence to sell to parents.

how do u lighten, i creat a layer(control-j) then change from normal to screen in CS 2...it lightens well..

ie..

since you brought it up......not sure if i loaded the D70 files for NN or not, i tried to calibrate for the D70s....didnt go to well.......lol

will the D70 ones work better than just running it normal?

thanks

Yes. In fact it is calibrated for each ISO setting, and you can choose which ISO profile according to the original setting, so it will not remove any more detail than necessary.

I can't find the comparisons I did about a year ago, but at ISO1600 you can emulate ISO 3200 at -1EV, and recover in post processing. Using the ISO1600 NN setting, it won't be a work of art, but in a pinch you won't miss the shot, and should be able to print a legible 5 x 7.

The D70 profile should be identical and work fine as the cameras are electronically identical.

George Riehm

Here is a real quick example.

Original was taken at f/2.8, ISO1600, -1EV. Shot in RAW and converted to JPEG, then processed via Noise Ninja using the D70 profile at ISO 1600.

Camera focus on the closest object (chair back) to show worst case noise in the bokeh area. As you can see focused detail is pretty decent, and OOF areas are not too bad considering that this is ISO3200...

...And it allowed the shot at 1/40 instead of 1/20.

Don't be afraid to experiment. I use the rear command wheel as my exposure adjust and shoot in aperture priority most of the time.

Like I said, if all else fails...

thanks george, appreciate the tutorial......

just got back from my D70 workshop.....not bad, i now know how to meter a subject manually.....that should be interesting

Where can you get the Nikon D70 Profile for Noise Ninja? I just have 'Default' and I have to scan the image everytime I want to do the Noise Ninja. Can anyone give me a link to download or perhaps email? Thanks.

Would be interested to see if it works better then just doing the 'scan image' thing everytime.

Never mind... appears I found them directly from the site. If that is where you would of sent me, thanks :P If there are better ones out there then the ones they supply at the picturecode website, let me know! Thanks.

Interested to apply this on some old indoor arena (western horse show) I did. See if it makes any better differences!

furthermore

when i load a pic, it doesnt automatically recognize the ISO level, is this normal?

i have to go up to load profiles and scroll down to the needed one, and apply it???

seems like a pain really, and doesnt seem much better than just the default??

sometimes i go up to 12 on lumin.
what do others do on the USm sharpening??

thanks
