Hi all,

New member here and sorry if this seems like a sillly question but..

I'm looking to buy a digital camera, have done a search on the forum and I am a little confused at what dicission to take so need your help.

In terms of money the two cameras are virtually the same price, I know the Fuji s-9000 (s-9500 in the U.K) is a p&s and the Nikon D50 is a proper DSLR.

I am a total novice but love photography and plan on keeping the camera for a few years. On paper I can't really tell the two apart (except the Nikon D50 takes a slightly better quality pictures but it seems the Fuji has better functions - or is that just fuji's marketing).

As a novice photographer the Nikon should sway the arguement by taking better pictures but the real question I guess is whether to go for a basic entry DSLR or top end P&S...

Help please!

Well I think that you need to ask yourself a few questions.
1. What will the camera be used for?
2. How portable do you want the camera to be?
3. How deep is your interest in photography?
4. Do you need to have your pics in RAW format for post processing?

Stepping into the DSLR world is both intimidating and exciting but it can be over kill for people who don't have a use for all of the advanced functions that come with a DSLR. If all you want to do is take decent pictures and maybe play with the manual controls then a P&S might be for you. If you plan on getting "serious" about photography, maybe going pro at some point then I would get a DSLR.

As far as the choices go that you are looking at I would choose the Nikon just for the fact you have tons of swappable lenses and flashes to choose from and this is coming from a self admitted Fuji fanboy. Personally I believe I can get as good a photos from my F10 as you can from the S9000 and the F10 is small enough to fit into my pocket and go anywhere. I don't print alot of what I take so max resolution isn't as big of a concern for me. Thats just my opinion of course, I'm sure other people have different views on this subject.

Thanks Paul,

To be totally honest it will be an all purpose camera which I will use for normal family fun pictures but also for the ability to take (hopefully) some artistic shots.

For some reason was leaning towards the Fuji but think thats mainly due to the amount of reasearch I have done on it. Still looking into the Nikon but as you say the DLSR world is a little scarey.
I do intend to print the pictures but beleive both cameras are ok at that, with the Nikon edging it on quality (although the S9000 has 9m pix versus the 6.1m pix)

But totally appreciate your comments so would say:

Nikon : 1
Fuji : 0
