1 x 50mm f/1.4 + hood
3 x Bogen QR Plate (I THINK they'll fit on my Amvona clone. If not, I'll return them)
3 x SanDisk Ultra II 2GB CF Card
----------------------------------
That'll give me a total of 10 GB of good, fast memory that I can use with RAW if need be, half a gig of reasonable but not fast memory, and 2GB of poo poo slow memory for desperate times...you know...if I'm stuck in the amazon and fill up the other 10.5GB and reeeeeally wanna get a shot of that monkey!
I've also wanted a fast prime for awhile now. That'll cover me there and I vowed to have a hood on every lens except the kit (the hood pretty much costs more than the lens itself is worth...and I almost never use it).
I got the 3 QR plates so I can have one on each camera body under the grip, one on my 70-200 tripod collar, and one on my Bigma tripod collar. The tripod obviously came with one, so I only needed 3 more to cover everything. Amvona wants $20 each for theirs, and the Bogens cost $12 each. Adding them to my B&H order saved shipping, making it a no-brainer as long as they fit...which they should.

You betcha! I hope I get a reasonably sharp copy wide open. I don't expect razor sharpness but I do intend to use it without stopping down...I mean that's the whole point. heh.

Hah coolness. Post some real life shots when you get a chance. I think we've all seen enough test shots by now! :p

I'm gonna be trying out a 50 1.4 next week when I get back to Los Angeles. Parm - how do you like yours? (I'm assuming you opened the box by now. ;) ) Do you have the 50 1.8 to compare it to?

Just tastefully arrange some cinder blocks...for a deck I mean. Wouldn't make for a very good lens.

Yep, I think you're gonna dig the 50 1.4 Don. We've all heard the comments "Its soft wide open." It kicks my 1.8's fanny - Wide open. Both shot wide open and there is enough difference in sharpness to call it "night and day." I for some reason didn't do the 1.4 at 1.8 - retarded I know. I'll have to do that later. Check out my 50 1.4 thread. I'm updating it now with your fav test shots.:D

Cool. I've been following it and I do like what I see. Mine's set to arrive Monday. I was actually happy with my 1.8 when it focused....but I couldn't rely on it AT ALL. This one should be a lot nicer since it has USM.

Damn, now I have to go out and get one of these too.
It's hard keeping up around here. :p
I actually do want this lens, but the camera must come first.
30D, then 17-55, then 580ex, then 50 f/1.4?
I might even skip on the 580ex and 50 f/1.4 and snag a cheaper, used copy of the 85L.
Autofocus is overrated, anyways. :D

This post cracks me up!
I do the same thing sometimes.
I can picture myself staring at the box of a new lens.
there are 2 types of emotions that can be present...............
1) excitement at the arrival of the new lens.
2) fear, that the new lens might be a nonsharp copy or not live up to your expectations so you are afraid to open the box and test it.
:D

That sums up my take on it as well. I mean it was soft at 1.8 but nothing so bad that I'd curse the $75 lens. But saying "WHEN IT FOCUSED" is the gods honests truth. I did notice that triple focusing did increase my chance of having it finally settle in on and focus where I wanted with a higher percetange of accuracy than just focusing and shooting. . . but still. . . 1.4 USM focus bam! Good day!

"I don't care who you are thats funny $Hi# right there!" its the truth too - Jamie slow down - "You're gonna get a belly ache!" These damn forums will spend your money for ya.

LOL - If my images would come out like the 85Ls I'd find a way to deal with the hit or miss AF on my 50 1.8.

Cool, can't wait for the CDI vs Parm 50 f/1.4 shootouts - cute kids vs that weird creative stuff that Parm churns out!:D
I can't join in any more though, mine shipped out to a new home today.:(

lol yeah I'm trying to get it figured out so that I can use it in tough/wierd lighting like live bands at the local pub, if I ever even get to shoot there. Still like JPEG better as you know from that other thread.
I'll be sure to get some test shots once the lensy arrives. Oddly enough I'm not overexcited about it...but I do want to try some no-DOF stuff. heh.
What is the best price you've found on the 1.4? I am in the market too.

checked today: Canonga Camera $309.95
http://www.canogacamera.com/detail.aspx?ID=4504
Adorama - $314.95
http://www.adorama.com/CA5014AFU.html?searchinfo=canon%2050%201.4
Both USA warranties
I bought from Canoga b/c I'll get it in one day (though I pay Calif. sales tax works out to better than if I got next day air from Adorama w/ no sales tax.)

Got mine at B&H because I also added some other stuff. Cost the same as Adorama. I usually go with B&H despite occasionally higher prices because they're closer to me than most other online vendors. I can pay for ground and get it the same speed as I would paying extra for 2-3 day service from another place...thus negating the savings on the item itself.

Lowest I've seen is at KEH at 306. but I think last I checked they were out of stock. I've bought from Canoga before they are good. I got mine from B and H for 314 though.

They have a good price but they don't have a Ground Shipping option. Their cheapest shipping to me was about $18 (FedEx 2 Day Saver I believe), negating the $6 more I paid for the item itself and only $10.40 for ground shipping to my location. Ground from B&H to me only takes 2-3 days...so not much of a benefit.
Plus Norman's hood costs a few bucks more.
