First time DSLR here, I've debated the D50, and figured I could always learn from you guys. I'll be coping the whole thread thats stickied.
Budget

$1000MAX

Size
Doesn't matter, I have large hands, so I like something a little bigger.

Features
I need a good image quality, I'll be doing alot of macro, and landscape shots
At least 6MP

General Usage

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? Not yet

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? Low light, yes,

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? yes

Miscellaneous

I've debated the D50 with the 18-70mm DX lens, when I saw the price (898) I considered the XT. Anyways, I have nothing (except software) so $1000 for lens and body or kit.

And, if you think it would be smart to wait for some camera to come into my price (I'm rather impatient ATM) let me know.

Thanks in advance.

If you shop around you should find the D50 18-55 kit quite a bit cheaper than that... I put together my kit last week listed below with a spare battery, bag, couple of filters & remote control for $1k shipped. If I'd got the 18-55 instead of the 28-80 it woudl have been a little over, but to be honest, as I said in your other thread, I now regret that decision.

It would seem from your replys to questions that you should concentrate on good lenses, macros or extention tubes for macro work and fast eg 2.8f or better for inside work.

SF,

I'm not quite sure I follow. I'll be doing alot of...shooting everything. I don't have one type of style...

You can get a D50 body only, then go over to Nikonians and get the 18-70 dx lens used for around $200. They're going up for sale rapidly since the 18-200 came out. That would put the whole kit around $750, and you'd have a winner for a kit lens.

wow. Not only do they have a ton of lens...but D70. as well.

Do you think I should head towards a used D70 or get a new body only D50?

Either one would be fine, in my opinion. I'd rather get a brand new body personally, but that's just me. I like my electronics new.

Whichever one makes you happy is the right one :)

I agonized over this decision myself over the last few weeks, before jumping with the new D50... the D70 is a little bigger, maybe a little more sturdily built and does have a few extra bells and whistles, but nothing really outstanding. Arguably the D50's straight out of the camera picture quality is slightly better than the D70, especially at high ISO settings.

nuf said, I prefer new electronics as well. I'll probably go ahead and order the D50 body (I get a free 1gb card hurray!) and attempt to pickup the lens at that other forum.

Thanks.

Also consider Konica Minolta 5D/7D they are price dropped, and big/ergonomic. Have excellent grip.

It is a value, cheap camera, with AS in all your lenses for free.
Consider getting Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 at $300, versus Canon's new 18-55 f/2.8IS at $1150, while you get IS/AS at both lens. Dunno 'bout optical quality though, canon probably better.

Even the 18-70 bundled kit lens is excellent when coupled with AS.
