This lens is priced at $1100 approximately.

The main pros of this lens are f/2.8, Image stablizisation, Claimed as L quality.

But IMO, from the bodies of Canon EF-S range, it seems they are aimed at more lower segment (non-pros), amateurs, and budget photographers. The XT is only $700-800, and 20/30D is around $1200/$1300. But why they make the EF-S lenses with high price tag? Many people will prefer going full frame with this, as there are wider range of EF lenses with equivalent zoom range to the EF-Ss. The 24-70 L USM will be better than this 18-50 lens... Or is IS that important? I just don't understand.

In my country the 5D costs $3000. Yea it's still more expensive than the 1.6x cameras, but the L lenses you buy for this camera will be an investment, while for EF-Ss, the future is very uncertain.

Does EFS usable in 1.3x cameras?

Thanks

edit... i didnt read the whole previous thread about the 18-50 IS f/2.8, is it the same with this one? I think the first few pages looked different

Well, as an added bonus, it's 17-55. ;) The thing I think we've concluded is that the real reason this is not an L lens is that it's an EF-S. The quality is there, but it cannot be used on any but the 1.6x sensors. Still, the combination of a 30D and this lens is quite a quality start, and is only marginally more expensive than my D200 and 18-200VR. The D200 has a bit more capability in terms of features and putting the controls out there where you can get at them easily, but the 30D will be a very nice camera and I predict the lens will be far superior to the 18-200VR in the 17-55mm range. Of course, from 56-200mm, the 18-200VR will be infinitely better. :p

This lens is roughly the equivalent of Nikon's 17-55DX, and if the image quality is the same, there will be no complaints about the price. It will be worth it.

but during the announcement of 17--85IS f/4-5.6 IS USM canon also claims it to be on par with L, while in fact its on par with 18-200 lenses in that range.

Sigma have that range with f/2.8 at $350 right? I know it's without the IS. But in real world, people don't even want KM5D's free IS, why would they want to pay the extra $700 for IS.
