Just curious as to what y'all think of this. Flash bounced at 5 o'clock, 65 degrees off the wall/ceiling. The television provided the catchlights. This isn't a formal portrait...just playing around.

TV as catchlights...how American! The lighting is great, though. Not using that LS much after reading Neil's tutorial...?

Haha yeah he's a TV addict. He was fascinated by Elmo (hence the stuffed one being on his head).

Actually I sold it way before his tutorial (I think). I decided to get rid of it when I tried it at the Emory wedding and it sucked light like a mother****er. Since it proved to be only useful in small rooms I figured...what the heck I might as well bounce off ceilings in that case. The room has to be small enough to do it anyway. I was going to just use my Stofen...

Neil's tutorial just gave me ideas about bouncing off the walls, without the Stofen. I don't use any diffusers anymore. Putting a diffuser on outside would only make the unit work harder so I just use bare flash. -2 FEC and proper metering works wonders outdoors.

I like the results of bouncing out of corners the best. It throws light from the left, right, and top of the subject for an almost studio-lights kind of illumination.

In large dark rooms, I've yet to find anything that's better than the FlipIt! Just in case you're looking to spend a bit more money...

Hmm. I've looked at it but I haven't felt the urge to pull the trigger on it. I'll probably just use my built in bounce card on the 580 or if I need more throw, the reflecter majiggy I rigged up. I have them mounted via an elastic band now...in 2 sizes. I don't love 'em as much as I used to but I think if I was desperate I could make use of 'em. They're almost like shooting into a single silver umbrella functionality-wise.

I've found that even the omni bounce with throw too much light forward when I am bouncing creating unwanted shadows. . . I still don't have a clue about flash! :D Loving it!

I've had mixed results with it. Sometimes I liked what it does, sometimes it's too harsh. Seems like when I bounce it at 60 or 90 degrees I get better results than the recommended 45, although still not always pleasing to my eye. If I'm using it the way they say you should use it, I find that the bounce card built into the flash works better than the Stofen.

PS: Here are 3 more pics. No flash this time, outdoors. I used my 70-200 at f/2.8 simply because I just don't use it nearly enough. Can't wait till it's warmer out so the lighting is more pleasing.

Thanks Sherlock & Andy. I like the lens. Just don't get to use it as much as I'd like. I should be shooting some girls I found on onemodelplace.com once the weather warms up too (no studio) and I'll be sure to use it.

I missed focus on a couple of those shots (one shown, a couple others I deleted) but I'm thinking it's because of how fast he moves and such a small target he makes. That and inexperience with the lens itself.

Could someone please feel me in on Neal's tutorial. I've seen this referenced before and would love to read it. Could someone point me in the right direction. Nice pic CDI... I have the original Rebel and have been deciding if I want to get 20d or spend a little more money on 30d. Thanks for your help.
