My money's on Jamie - he's in a buying mood lately and he seems so excited...

Can I vote for myself! This lens (and the extra new features on the 30D) have pretty muched convinced me to put off the 1 series upgrade for another year or two...
In my eyes, a 30D + my 20D with a 17-55 on one and the 70-200 on the other could get me through an entire wedding without changing lenses!
Keeping my fingers crossed that they'll actually live up to the hype (and not disappoint like the 17-85...).

Looks like PMA will be exciting times for Canon users. Congrats on that. We Nikonians had our day back in December, though we do get one new lens, the 105VR Micro (Which was one reason I bought a used AI-S 55 micro instead of spending more on the 60. I had heard rumors about this one).
As to the lens this thread is about, the 17-55. It seems very highly specified, yet it didn't rate an L designation by Canon. Is that just because it's an EF-S, and only EF lenses qualify?

All I gotta say is that I'm very impressed by the specs of this new lens (and hopefully the quality!). Looks like my bet on a high-end EF-S lens came true. :D

Can someone give a link to that lens? It sounds good but all I've seen is the label.

Look in the press release.
"The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM offers image quality on a par with Canon’s highly regarded L-series lenses." :D
Try DPR for the full specs and images of the lens.

Count me in as the 1st to get the 30D.
I will be checking the B&H site daily to see when it is available.

Ahh I just saw the PDF. I hadn't gotten to all the other threads yet. Looks good.
HOWEVER I'm hoping they meant "list" when they said "retail"! hah.
I already have two excellent Tamron lenses - the 17-35 and 28-75. I'm pretty much OK at the wide end. My next aquisition, money permitting, will be a 70-200 lens or maybe even a better tripod. At this point I'm not sure whether I'll get a 70-200 f4L or a Sigma 70-200 f2.8. My Tamron 70-300 is not optically as good as I'd like.

Unless my financial situation changes drastically in the next few months, I'll just round out my system with a UWA. I can't afford a 30D and already have 2 low mileage XTs. I have a pair of excellent Ls and a very nice superzoom to go long. I'll have, by the time this 17-55 comes out, 2 or 3 fast primes for those low light situations, and then the UWA would cover me quite well.
I can't see spending $1150 to gain 7mm and IS. I also can't see selling off the 24-70 to justify it. I like that lens too much and it would leave me with a 55-70 gap. Not too bad, mind you, but I already have 24-200 covered with relative speed and excellent quality, and then 200-500 covered with quality, just less speed.

LMAO!
Looks like those who knew enough to Vote all knew and thought very much alike!
I'd say Jamie as well - If it is a quality piece of glass then it will prove to be very usefull for him. Just as he mentioned, second body with the 70-200 IS L and he'll be like butah from 17-200 @ 2.8 and w/IS. I'd be interested in this lens as well, but as Don mentioned, that $1150 better be MSRP, making it more like $750-850. But until I can swing that I'll stick with my primes. I think after a 50 1.4 purchase. . . maybe a used 20D is in my near future. . . :D Then again, blue makes a good point. . . that 30D does have enough extra features that are worth while to make an upgrade make sense. . .
Christian good call on the 85 1.2L mkII.

It shows some real commitment to APS sensors and gives 20D/XT/30D users some real confidence to move forward in their camera systems.
Jamie, this has got to be your next purchase - it's like a 28-90 f/2.8 with IS. If the optics are sound then this thing is gonna be on backorder for months. You could probably do a whole wedding with just this lens alone.

That 105mm sounds awesome too, and equally shows Nikon users the commitment they have with APS too. Good to see Nikon leading the market in some areas after being a bit slow on the uptake over the years. Two strong brands are great for all of us - keeps them both honest.

The price wont bother me if image quality follows suite. I dont want 10-22efs quality at this price. I surely expect L quality in an EFS bundle.
This lens, if it produces sharp, contrasty images, will be the lens I purchase with the 30D in march.

The 105mm is an update to the 105mm FF macro, not an APS-C lens:D

I vote for Jamie too! :) I'm honored to be on the list but am somewhat disappointed in the specs for the 30D (which means I'm back to considering a 5D and an EF-S lens isn't in the cards for me.) I'll probably rent a 30D for the weekend once it's available just to be sure but was hoping for more MP, and more importantly, the 5D AF system.
I've been travelling since early this morning (and am still waiting for my luggage to catch up with me here in Oregon) so I'm not entirely clear on what's new on the 30D. But one thing I didn't see were any changes to the AF system. Did I miss something?

This is all I Found Pete - I think this supports your statement.
"Though the 9-point autofocus system and all aspects of its configuration and operation are the same as that of the 20D, the algorithm controlling autofocus in the 30D has been refined (though Canon has not revealed what has been addressed). The 20D's autofocus system is the most capable we've ever encountered in a midrange digital SLR; if you want better, you have to spend a lot more. We hope that Canon's tinkering with autofocus in the 30D only makes it a better performer than the already-capable 20D. Strangely, while many of the refinements in the 30D first appeared in the 5D last fall, the 30D did not get the 5D's 6 additional Assist AF points clustered around the centre."

The AF system (and weight, and 17-55 lens) is what're causing me to wait for another year or so before I upgrade to the 1D series. On the wedding photog forum I frequent, a lot of the guys with 1D's complain about a lag when you use a 1D with the AF Assist beam on your flash in really dark venues. The 20D (and 5D) don't exhibit this lag. On the other hand, they also say, that once the 1D's lock on, the AF is far more accurate than the 20D or 5D. I actually find my 20D to be pretty accurate. FWIW, I think my 20D's AF is more accurate than my XT (or 10D or DReb before it).

Well that occured to me after my post (I was sitting in the airport baggage claim area waiting for two hours hoping my bags would arrive on the next flight so I was a little distracted :( )
I may be confusing the mediocre AF on my XT with the more highly rated AF on the 20D. I'm gonna rent the 30D for a weekend as soon as it's available and then decide whether I go 5D or 30D.

I find the AF fairly mediocre too. I haven't seen really good AF at all on any camera though.
My next purchase, however, is most likely going to be a new tripod since the head on mine is a little flexible. It's OK for compacts but not for a dSLR.
Actually, my list of future purchases goes something like this:
1. A good Carbon-fibre tripod with a good ball head,
2. A nice 70-200 lens. Not sure whether this will be the Canon f4L, f2.8L, f2.8 L IS or the Sigma 70-200 f2.8.
Then I will probably sell my Tamron 70-300 and my Canon 50 f1.8.
3. A nice, fast 300/400mm lens.
4. A 10-22 Tokina or the Canon equivalent.
Then I might upgrade my Tamron glass to Canon L glass
Then I might upgrade my XT to a 1D Mk V.

Well one of the things that jumped out at me when I rented the 5D was how superior the AF was compared to my XT. It was awesome to use a camera that always actually focused (my XT says it's focused but when I check later turns out it wasn't.) I'd say my hit rate on the 5D was around 90% in almost all but the worst lighting conditions. My XT is more like 65-75%. I'd probably hang on to XT if it weren't for the focus issues. But that alone is enough to get me to upgrade.

Not having used a "better" camera in terms of AF, but based on my results, I know exactly what you mean. the 20D/used 20D desire is fading quickly, the 30D has enough improvements over the XT that if it were out back when I got the XT, I would have gone 30D - I considered the 20D but I didn't know too much at the time and kinda errored on side of the 20D not offering enough improvements over the XT to warrant the price difference - especially for someone who doesn't know anything. . . now that I do have some experience and knowledge and that the 30D is available with its improvements confirmed by Canon it does look like a better option than the 20D.

Unfortunately in my current poverty stricken state of existence, I'll have to tough it out with my lowly XTs for awhile yet.
I'd love to have a 30D or 1D Mk II (8.5 FPS = yummy) but what I can I say...I love glass and don't have everything I feel I need yet.

2 Rebel XTs
1 or 2 580 EXs?
24-70 2.8 L
70-200 2.8 L
Kit lens ? ? ?

I get the occasional poorly focussed photo. I do find this happens less with the flash attached as I assume it emits an infra-red focussing beam.
Actually, I would love to use the 5D. At the moment though I can't justify it as I'm hardly doing any photography right now. My next tasks - in order are:
1. Obtaining a better tripod with a better head.
2. Obtaining a 70-200 zoom lens - possibly the Sigma f2.8 70-200.
3. Obtaining a 300/400 lens.
4. selling my Canon 50 f1.8, Tamron 70-300.
Then I might get a new body
And somewhere in there, I want to get a vehicle, get a US driving license and so on.

Just one 580EX and yeah I still have the kit lens. You also forgot to include Bigma. :) That list is WHY I'm in poverty! :D :p If I wanted to list out EVERYTHING it could get kinda long-ish. But that'd be including the petty stuff like memory cards and the bracket, off shoe cord, bag, etc.
Even though I'm not a lover of primes, I want to get a nice set to cover my normal, mid, and short tele for lowlight stuff. Then an UWA for fun and coverage of the extreme wide. Once I get those, studio lights (might come before the UWA), backdrops, etc and then new bodies.
My non-photography business has been moving kinda slow lately so I'm going to have to pick up one of those god-forsaken job things too for a while.

Yeah. Hundred bucks for a memory card here...200 there. Batteries @ 50 bucks a pop if you buy OEM - heck I have $200 worth of OEM batteries alone, plus the $25 worth of SterlingTeks, tripod, monopod, ball head, better ball head because the first one sucked, better tripod because the one you tried to rig up out of cardboard didn't quite work (lil jab at Rhys there (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showpost.php?p=106496&postcount=2)), etc etc. :D
