Sorry, I mean Cannon A620 not A640.
Budget

GBP £250 ~

[U]Size

Standard Compact size (as per traditional camera dimensions, around 210 cm W+D+H summed).
I would prefer something pocket size although I don't plan to keep the camera in my pocket (I loose or damage them too easily when I do that).

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you?

6.1 Mp miniumm

* What optical zoom will you need?
Standard Zoom will suffice, preferablly 4x or greater.

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
Very Important - 8 (where 10 is the best)
I like to see the detail in pictures and often zoom in once I've got the picture onto my computer.

Do you care for manual controls?
Yes - very important. I want manual control as an option.

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for?
Lots of things - quite a variety in fact!
Landscape scenery,
Fast moving shots e.g. aeroplanes, cars, bungee jumpers, waterfalls and rivers, flying birds, etc. often at close range.
Close Ups (Macros Shots) e.g. insects
Family / friends photos.
(Indoor and Outdoor)
Some night shots, particularly of city scapes at night, maybe some underground shots with low to very low levels of light.
(NB, I expect the landscape scenery to be of high light intensity too, to make matters worse).

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?
The biggest picture I'd typically print would be A4
210 x 297mm

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?
Yes.

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?
Yes. Also, I sometimes take photo's from moving vehicles.

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate?
Nope.
I previously owned the Fuji Finepix E550 (when it only cost £160) but have since lost it :-( I really liked this camera especially with the functions & performance verse price ratio.
I liked the menu layouts and the general use of this camera - night shots were very good given the ability to manually increase ISO and shutter speed. I liked the size and battery life too. There were some signs of purpling when I looked close at some images though.

Are there particular models you already have in mind?

Fuji FinePix E900 (slightly over budget though)
Fuji FinePix S7000,
Cannon A620

These are the three I'm currently trying to decide between, but maybe you have better suggestions?

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features?

I'd like the option to be able to get an underwater housing for use in the future and also the ability to place a telescopic or wideangle lense on at somepoint. Also, I'd prefer something that uses AA batteries.

I'm not really sure how the performance of these three compares even though I've read all the excellent reviews here! I get the impression that the Cannon has better colour matching and photo quality than the Fuji 900 Zoom, but that the Fuji 900 Zoom has more functions that would enable you to take photos which you otherwise couldn't?

The S7000 got a bad review here for poor image quality. Plus it is big and bulky, and three years old. I'd say the A620 or E900 are better choices.

A620
cost less
7MP, 4 AA's, SD, swivel LCD

E900
cost more
9MP, 2 AA's, xD, has the higher ISO you like
