I have read and re-read the details for macro lenses and also what constitutes macro- not just going close but that the ratio should be 1:1. However I still need a lens that will allow me do go as close as 1 inch to the object which gives flexibility in details. Any guidance on this?
Cheers:)

I know of no macro lens that focuses 1 inch away from lens, close might be the EF-s 60 mm F 2.8 macro focuses about 7 inches from film plane, which is about 3-4 inches from end of the lens.

Quit thinking in inches. The 1:1 means: If you sensor is 22mm wide, you can make a subject that is 22mm wide fill the photo. So, any 1:1 macro will be able to fill the frame with a subject less than 1 inch wide.
There are a number of good macro lenses to choose from. There is the excellent Tamron f2.8 90mm SP Di, its optical quality is top notch. The Canon EF-S 60mm f2.8 USM has a faster focussing and silent motor. Same with the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 USM, it has about the same optical quality of the Tamron but is more expensive.
The Sigma 50mm f2.8 EX DG is the cheapest 1:1 macro you can get, it delivers good image quality too. Sigma also has a 105mm macro.

Minimum focusing distance is 24cm from the film plane (about 2" from the end of the lens).
Maybe you can add an extension tube to get to closer.
