if they drop $3000!!

so i am at henrys, looking at the 70-200 VR on the D70s, focusing ETC, i ask about the D200, girl gives me the D2x and says should focus the same....lol

anyway pretty nice cam, except the $$, if it was my living maybe, the D200 does sound sweet...but i have a question

i've read the D2x has 5 points of focus (cross-type section) and the D200/d70 etc only have 1, thus the D2x is MUCH BETTER/QUICKER to focus

1. is this something that nikon could do as a firmware upgrade to the D70s to make focus quicker????

2. i just read some guy saisd his D70 focus' quicker now that he has the gridlines turned off???? true?

3. and i notice ive been shooting with the NR on, i hear this effects focus in low light?

thanks guys

The D70 has 5 point focus. The D200 and D2X have 11 and are groupable.

1. No.

2. No.

3. Don't know. Never use NR.

George I wish you would stop beating around the bush so much with your answers and be a little more direct.

some language from nikonians....means nothing to me....lol

Looking through the viewfinder -which is just a little smaller than that on the D2x- as per the image above, it seems that the D200 has one AF cross-sensor, while the rest work in one direction only. A cross-sensor will work with both vertical and horizontal subjects, while a normal AF sensor works only in the direction it lies along. The center sensor, which is the one most used anyway, is a cross-sensor, and works in any direction. The rest work only in a horizontal or vertical orientation.

cant find the link now of course, but i am off to bed anyway

bottom line i guess the D2x AT system is better with the DAM 2000 and more cross type sensors?? some one will know.....I REALLY DONT LIKE THE NO POP UP ON THE d2X.......LIKE THERE WAS a risk of me buying it anyway...lol

0. The cross focus points don't make the camera focus faster. They do have some impact on accuracy of focus. The D200 has one, in the center. The D2X has several. I don't know if the D2H cameras follow the same pattern as the D2X. The D2X is significantly faster in focus because it has a bigger focus motor. I don't know if this particularly helps with the AF-S lenses, since they have their own motor built in (though the D2X battery is more powerful than the smaller cameras, so the lenses may take advantage of that), but it is significantly faster with non-AF-S lenses.

1. It's all about the motor. The D70 and even the D200 do not have the power to compete with the D2 cameras on focus speed.
2.
3. Software NR isn't applied until after image capture. I cannot imagine what this could possibly have to do with focus speed.

I don't think NR enabled will effect the focusing speed but, will slow down your frames per second speed.

There are a lot of pros that don't want a pop up. In fact, this is one of the key things that tells you that Nikon is targeting consumers with the D200. Lot's of pros will use it as a cost effective alternative or backup to the D2 series, but there's a pro bias against the pop-up.

One thing to consider, if they had left the pop-up off the D200, I'll bet the viewfinder would have been every bit as good as the D2X, as they would have had more room to make it bigger. I would not have regretted that tradeoff, but I also like the pop up, and the viewfinder is still WAY BETTER than what I had on the D70.

Erich,

I love the pop up because it serves as a built in controller to trigger an SB600 or 800, without springing for an extra controller.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with the D200 viewfinder ;) I was astonished at how much brighter and larger it is than the D70s I was using.

That's progress for ya.
