RAW / Large JPG
----------------
I always (except for continous shooting) set the pic of my Rebel XT to RAW+Large JPG.
I also mostly shoot in Av mode, except for last night where I tried the Portrait mode. To my surprise, only JPG Large was recorded, and while puzzled at first, the manual did confirm that Creative Zones don't permit RAW. This, I think is one of the dumbest decision made because if someone is using a scene mode it is very likely because that person doesn't know/care about the Exposure Triangle and White Balance. So Auto WB issues would be hard to recover in that case.

Transferring Pics
----------------
I am using WinXP and installed the drivers provided by Canon. I may be doing something wrong, but I can't get to the RAW files unless I use the ZoomBrowser to transfer them. I think this is due because Canon saves both the RAW and the JPG into one file while some other manufacturers use two.

This makes the transferring process quite painful, as I'm usually used to use the Camera as a USB mass storage device, copy the JPG files to MyPictures and the RAW files to MyPictures\RAW. Sure I can achieve the same thing with the provided software, but the experience is tedious, repetitive and slow.

Any workarounds/ideas?

Other than that, this camera is truly fantastic, even with that kit lens. Native (no PP) ISO 800 JPG pics are very usuable as a Wide-Screen Wallpaper, amazing!

you have to go to micorosft and download their RAW viewer. This will allow windows to recognize the CR2 format the XT uses. Then cut/copy and paste as normal.

I've had already downloaded this .NET RawViewer Shell Extension. It does show the CR2 file but only once decoupled from the JPEG. Am I doing something wrong?

There are two files - one jpeg and one cr2.

...Given that the manual also states that only one file is created when shooting both RAW+JPG.

A hidden setting maybe?

Nope. I did it and found 2 files on my CF card. If it was just one file, it'd be either jpeg or raw.

RAW + JPEG means exactly that. You get 1 RAW file plus 1 JPEG file. Personally I consider it a waste of space, but to each his own.

So then you are able to browse to your camera or CF card and view the RAW images fine? So, can you restate what the problem is? I was under the assumption that you were unable to view and or copy/paste these files through windows explorer.

I thought the XT used the .CRW extension, would this have something to do with it?

I think their reasoning here is that people who use the scene modes are unlikely to be attracted to RAW.

Or to put it another way, discerning photographers for whom RAW is attractive will be unlikely to restrict themselves to scene modes - knida like ordering your Ferrari with an automatic transmission...:p

I cannot see any CR2 files unless I use ZoomBrowser. Again, this happens only when shooting both RAW and JPG Large at the same time.

Bottom of page 52 clearly states that in such case, files are saved under the same file name and same folder.

The files do not have the same extension. .JPG and .CR2 is how to see the difference. Just tell XP to show the extensions. You will see both files and will see what is what.

I'd sugges that you download Microsoft RAW image viewer from here (assuming you use XP) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=D48E808E-B10D-4CE4-A141-5866FD4A3286&displaylang=en&Hash=F3N3X85

After poking around, here's what I've found:

Card reader: you see all the files (CR2 and JPG)
MyComputer\EOS Rebel (WinXP WIA driver): you see only the JPG files
Canon Zoom Browser: you see all the files (CR2 and JPG) but both a CR2 and JPG file are part of the same thumbnail

Workaround:
------------
So, if you don't want tor emove the CF card (pins could be damaged), then use ZoomBroser but configure it to automatically download all the pics (even duplicates) to the Desktop. From there one, you can copy the JPG and RAW to the desired locations.

I can't count the number of times my CF cards have gone in and out of my camera into my Sandisk card reader and back out, thousands of times? I think you'll be ok.

Careful Parm. If you only shoot a couple pics at a time, you risk ruining the photos by exposing those RAW negatives to sunlight! Make sure you fill up your card first! :D
