Hi there,
i just bought a 350d and love the camera, NOW, i know a little bit about lens but not enough, i need to get myself a good lens that needs to fulfill the following

- needs to be able to manage me shooting fishermen flyfishing on boats maybe thirty or forty feet away so it needs to be able to zoom a bit.

- needs to be able to take closer group type shots say 6-8 feet away

- would love if it had image stabilizer (cause i'm gonna be on a boat myself half of the time)

-needs to be quick enough to focus on fish jumping out of the water! (i know thats down to me mostly but here's hoping)

-needs to be around 400-600dollars or 500 or so euros

Thats that and all of this because the standard 18-55 lens that came with the camera it is not great quality and will not zoom anywhere near where i need it to be! I was advised by a guy in the shop (with the big window) that the lens i need is the canon 70 -300 with image stabilizer but wouldn't i almost need a tripod to mount this on - just imagine me trying to hold this thing in a boat with a big wave!

thanks all

He recommended 70mm for group shots 6-8-ft away? He's an idiot...with the crop factor that's like, what...112mm? For a group shot 6-8-ft. away? Never talk to this person again!

If you want to stick with Canon lenses, then there's only one lens with image stabilization that offers semi-wide to tele capability that's within your budget...the EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM which goes for around $400.00 (U.S.). It's a great all-purpose lens and has generally good reviews...

In 35mm equivelant, it's a 45-216mm zoom...perfect for your stated purpose.

There may be some non-Canon image stabilized zooms as well, but the one I mentioned just might be the ticket...

If this action is in daylight, I recommend going for the 70-200mm f/4L. Top notch quality both optically and build for about $579 USD.

You can stop your kit lens down to f/8 and toss it on a tripod for group shots.

what? I'm not aware there are non canon image stabilized zooms, could you post some info ? Thanks

and..... if you get a 'Konica Minolta' its very easy to get image stabilized lens... LOL. Nikon D50 also have 18-200VR lens.

I guess there's a lot lot you're not aware of. And why do you clutter up threads? The guy OWNS a 350D already, so what you're doing ammounts to trolling, which is against forum rules.

cool down!

thanks for the info. I really not aware, asked about that a while ago at dpreview, and some people told me no third parties manufacturing it.

no trolling intended dude, some countries have a change of mind refund policy, nothing wrong on letting him aware of options, rigt?;)

You really need to stop with the comparisons, as it's getting a little annoying. Especially when someone already owns a different camera, and is asking about lenses and accesories specifically keyed to that camera.

As for 3rd party IS/AS/OS Here is the info you requested:

I'm wondering why Sigma has not released other OS lenses... Maybe cost?

thanks for the info.

ok... he got the camera, I just said that small line to make him aware. It's possible that he got the 350d because of an aggressive salesman? While it didnt suit him in the end. My small line won't do any harm, and you certainly don't need to bring it up to attention, just leave it there. Why would you must be annoyed anyway...

Thank you

It's not really any of your business why he purchased what he purchased. He has what he has and wants lenses for it...this isn't a case of "what camera should I buy?"

He's now in the "what lenses should I buy?" stage and bringing up other cameras is inappropriate - and a bit childish in my opinion.

I don't know if it's against forum policy (I doubt it is) but your signature is quite annoying too. Very trollish and looking like you're a K-M employee.

Edit

I found out about the Ignore list. So now I'm back to post in this forum, and those who personally hate me, please put me in ignore list too. So you dont have to read my annoying messages.

thanks

ok i apologize to you all, as well as the bringing up other camera thing.

bye bye

farewell, maybe you will be happy after im gone. ill not post here again.

ask jeff to delete all of my post, which will also delete my sig.

about the sig, its the fact, whats wrong with that?
All Sony R1 reviewers also compares the lens stackup with XT, and that dont make them a sony employee

You may not see this, but just in case...

Posting your sig comparison once was enough to state your oinion and make your point. I don't think that anyone here objects to that, and most of us have done that. But putting in your sig is annoying, and grossly overstates and restates your opinion, in threads that have little to do with that subject.

Accepting criticism is part of posting your opinion. While I don't claim to represent the majority on these threads, all I ask is that you try to add something new and useful to the conversation in dialog form, vs. a repetitive monolog form.

Thanks.
