I have the 20D and I am looking for a telephoto lens that can reach 400 or 500 mm withouth breaking the bank. I will use it mainly outdoors shooting wildlife and occasionally my kids sports. I am looking at the Canon400 5.6 or the Canon 100-400 IS, but also heard Tamron has the200-500 any thoughts on any of these lenses

Since you are thinking about dropping $1400 on a lens you might take a look at the Sigma 50mm-500mm f4-f6.3 (~$1000). The reviews so far have been pretty good, and the one person I know that owns this lens really likes it on his 10D. Unfortunately it is not Image Stabilized so don't toss that monopod just yet.

That said, for kids sports and critters, the IS feature is very nice if you can afford it.
