I still used flash on most of these, but only at -2 FEC for minimal fill. I shot in Av mode due to all the chasing around and varying light angles.

I would have liked to have him out during the real magic hour but it started to cool off again so I got him back inside.

Cute little fella!

Yeah he is. Really hams it up for the camera...but dangit I wish AI Servo would be a little more reliable. I can't exactly use One Shot since he moves so much and so fast, and AI Servo doesn't always lock on either.

Good shots Don. :) Can't believe all that snow melted already!

Thanks. Natural light works! ;-)

Hah yeah the snow didn't last worth a hoot. But I hate snow so it's all good! It's about 52 degrees here right now, which is kinda warm considering how late it is. Snow's still dripping off the cars and rooftops. Can't wait till spring!

Also can't wait till this guy grows about 5 more inches. He's at neither the center focus point nor the lower middle one in portrait mode! Makes focusing on his face a real pain in the rear. Center point = too much headroom, lower middle = too much footroom!

Notice how his hands are cut off on a lot of the shots...that's from using the center focus point. When I get down to his level, he's too short for me to get a good composition with any focus points for his face. Focus-recompose is WAY out of the question unless I wanna shoot at f/8 and look like I'm using a P&S!

I wonder what your thoughts are on the whole "Who cares aperture" ie F8 when your subject is infront of a wall or some other structure. . . ? Mr. Peterson makes an interesting point about that situatin being a situation in which one could approach it with the, as he said it, "Who cares aperture."

I think these are great photos of the little guy. Are you starting to think about how you might be able to approach photographing him differently? I know I do when I think about my friends kid or my GF's neice. All my photos are starting to look like everything else that I have taken and I am currently thinking about how to do things differently with them. I like tight crops and always being at or below their level which, I'm sure you know, is easier said than done! We aren't as flexible as we once were. Its hard for me to get my 6'4" frame down low fast and repeatedly.

My "who cares aperture" is more like 5.6. lol. I don't like having the P&S look. I guess in front of a wall it's no big deal like you said but in the yard I like to have the BG blurred but not creamy. I like a sense of place but I don't want distracting details.

My pants are pretty dirty from kneeling in the wet grass and such...I'm all over the place. Sitting down in the living room is really common for me....sometimes even laying down on my back to get his little 3 foot frame from below. I'm probably the most active uncle to ever shoot his nephew. :D

I've tried to think of new ways to shoot the little guy but being cold, we're almost always inside so there's only so much you can do. Once it warms up on a more consistent basis and I can get him outside regularly, I'm sure I'll come up with new things.

How lucky is his mother (presume your sister)? She must be like wow - look at the photos of my boy I get free!

I'm finding that a bit of a challenge too - especially of the little fella (well he doesn't move much).

I'm gonna try some more environmental portraiture with maybe some wide lenses just to break the monotony.

Yeah he's my sister's boy. I started an album of 4x6 prints for her gift this most recent Xmas, and had about 50 shots already in it from his birth to the present at that time. I told her I'll keep filling it until he turns 18.

Even if the pics suck she can't complain...they're free! :D

That's why I'm so anxious for the weather to change. I want to get him outside more...and not just around the house. I want to take him places and capture him trying new things and enjoying himself. Things like feeding ducks at the creek (if we can get 'em to come over!) and playing in a park, etc. Simple, environmental, natural stuff.

This little house of ours gets really boring after awhile. Same ol' same ol'....
