woah!! finally got my first DSLR camera, the amazing nikon D50 hehe... :D

got it in a nice price for 510 pounds, with lens kit, 2gb 80X sd card, and a nikon bag. pretty happy with it, soon im gonna get my prime lens! the known 50mm f1.8! yay

anywas, got some curious questions bout it, ive been trying to take some sample shots and once ive changed some of the mode dials, some pictures came out black only, is there something wrong with that? and i can here some noise inside the camera, like a small tiny thing falling apart, is this normal?

and im wondering, what do you need after having DSLR? i mean, do i need to buy those filter, uv filter, or hoods, screen protector, cleanin kit? what would be your suggestions for a beginner like me? what are the basic stuffs i need after i bought my DSLR? any comments would be really nice... thank you :D

Congrats on your new purchase.

As for the dark pictures...you aren't saying what your settings are it could just be massive underexposure. You also haven't mentioned whether you remembered to take off the lens cap... Noise inside the camera, I'm not familiar with Nikons but it could be an orientation sensor (my Canon has a minor rattle and I was told that's what it is) and it's nothing to worry about.

What you'll need is a sensor cleaning kit and blower bulb for maintenance. You'll also need memory cards, batteries, lenses, a flash, more batteries, more lenses, a flash bracket, studio lights, backdrops, more lenses, a camera bag, more memory, another D50 to carry as backup, more lenses....

The sound is normal, do not worry about that. Hard to say why you seem to make black pictures without any details on what you did to accomplish that.

You'll probably be able to get more specific advice down in the Nikon DSLR forum.

I'd suggest for general DSLR accessories you pick up a lens cleaning cloth, some lens cleaning solution, a blower brush to clean the sensor when it needs to be cleaned.

Based on the description you gave, funny sounding noise inside, sounds like something falling apart and you getting nothing but black photos I'd say based soley on that, you've potentially got a big problem. Then again, it could just be your description and usage and nothing to do with the camera being damaged. Your description was vague

Put it in auto mode and start taking some photos - If you are getting photos in auto mode then you're probably underexposing dramatically in a manual mode, thus getting nothing but black.

If you still get all black images I'd call the distributor and get an RMA #.

My D50 has a rattle too and i've been told its normal - mine has been working fine for about 3 months and a lot of pictures. For the black picture issue...just like the people above mentioned, check to make sure you haven't underexposed the mess out of it. Thats the first thing I did when I got mine and didn't know the first thing about SLRs (which is still pretty much the case :) ). You'll look back and laugh about it. Have fun playing with your new camera.

As far as rattle goes, my D50 has no rattle? Have you tried removing lens and turning camera to see if something loose is in it that falls out?

The rattle is not really a rattle, just a soft sound you can hear from the flash compartment when you move it around.

coldrain is right, its just the orientation sensor making a little click sound when you tilt the body.
