I'm thinking about buying the Sony DSC-H1 digital camera. One of the things I'd like to use the camera for is taking photos of animals at night but I'm worried about the flash scaring the animals away.
Does anyone have any tips/advice?

Great camera. But even if you don't scare the animals away I doubt the flash will go far enough, unless you set up some sort of slave system.
My FZ20 flash range is only 3 metres on ISO100 and I don't think the Sony is any better.

Alternatively, if night animal shot is one of the main purpose for buying the camera, you should look at the kings of 'lowlight no flash' Fuji cameras.
Fuji FinePix S9000 - has hotshoe for external flash; should you find the flash range doesn't go far enough.
Fuji FinePix S5200 - no hotshoe but cheaper than S9000.
Both have ISO up to 1600 meaning they can handle low light situation.
Or....for best result, invest on a dSLR.
