HI all

I just bought myself a canon 350d rebel with its free 18-55 lens.
Hueston we have a problem!! ---help--- the camera sales guys have managed to confuse me bigtime.

My problem - well i bought the camera for general use but i also hope to use it for my job which is graphic design. I want to be able to take close up shots of actual fly fishing flies (ie from a couple of cm) and be able to get great detail etc. Now the camera guys (two different shops) each told me that the above lens would do a great job but now i dont know which to buy because i dont know enough about photography and lenses to understand what the differences are. I had the 50mm on my camera in one shop and it seemed to do exactly what i wanted it to do - but when i went to the next shop the guy said the 105mm would do the same job but better!!!

Also i want to buy a better lense than the one supplied with the camera which i will be able to take more action type shots from a distance (lets say for instance a guy in a boat waving his fly rod about the place) one guy advised me that the sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro would do a good job of action shots as well as the odd bit of macro shooting, is this good advice.

In a nutshell i want two lenses - one to take great close up macro photography and one for taking action shots at a bit of a distance (say furthest the subject would be twenty or thirty meters away roughly)

Thats it - hope some of you guys who now how can help a dumbo like me.
Thanks very much
ps please explain as if i know nothing because fact is i probably dont know much more than that as regards the technicalities of cameras!

regards

The 70-300 APO DG is a good lens for the money, and will give you a good tele range. It has an 1:2 macro mode, meaning you can get things a bit smaller than 2 inches wide to fill the photo. A dedicated macro lens like the Tamrom 90mm f2.8, the 50 anf 105mm f2.8 Sigma and the EF f2.8 60mm macro from Canon all allow upto 1:1macro photos, so less tan 1 inch wide to fill the frame.
All are of good quality and you can choose the 50mm Sigma to keep your expenses low (and leave room for the tele zoom lens).
