Jeff: any predictions for the pro2? Will it be a straight competition to the sony r1?
my reasonable wishlist/prediction would be:
-Digic2
-same 10mpx cmos sensor used in the r1 (since it's sony it's probably available to other manufacturers)
-28-300mm range F2.4-F4.0 with optical IS, up to F16 (both wide&tele)
-640x480@30fps MPEG4 movie mode with unlimited length
-1cm macro
-RAW mode of course
-ISO100-3200
-Shutter speeds 1/4000-15"+bulb
-Interval shooting
-flip out&twist 2"-2.5" lcd 235k pixels (gaining up in low light)
-EVF with 235k pixels
-Flash with 12 guide number (m)
-orientation sensor
-USB2.0 High Speed
-SD card slot

any chances for such a cam? I love the out-of-cam images from canons, that's why I think canon could do miracles with that kind of sensor. And since it would be a bridge digicam not a dslr, it would have more sharpened images out-of-cam, the way I like it :) with that sensor live preview and video would be possible too, sensitivities are there, maybe the lens is the biggest wish, but I would welcome such a range, and comparable fastness to the r1 lens, and with IS of course. This around $1000 (oh well, maybe a bit more) would be awesome, wouldn't it? :)

Yes, but we still didn't see any use of their own sensors in conmpacts, so that's still a question...

Because those are CCD technology. Currently, it doesn't make economic or technical sense to use CMOS in small sensor P&S cameras...

But, don't you think there there's a fairly good chance that the Pro2 (if there is one) will have an APS-C sensor? In which case, it's not going to be a Sony sensor...;)

Now, if it has a CCD, that's another story...but that would be a marketing disaster for Canon (because of the R1), so I'll bet real money on a Canon CMOS sensor...

I'm hoping for canon one too, since I think it's better, but what I really hope is that it will be aps-c sized in the pro2 and have live preview thus video mode (mpeg4), and a nice bright range with IS :)

news: konica minolta quits the camera business, and sony will carry on their dslrs -> sony knew half a year ago that they will have a dslr, and still they released the R1, so maybe the pro2 with the aps-c sized sensor isn't just a dream (if sony didn't think r1 and dslrs would be competition for eachother, why could canon think that? :))

Any rumors?

Nothing. Even the guessing has been crappy, IMO. You'll just have to wait until Feb 24...:p

I thought PMA starts on 26th of feb

don't you think that a $1000 P&S would compete with the Rebel? Canon makes a lot more money from lens and would like to develop the upper end as much as possible. I think any camera that costs more than a rebel would be a bad idea and would ultimately hurt canon. It's fine for Sony cause it's the closest thing to a dSLR at the time. Canon constantly cripples their cameras to encourage us to upgrade to the next level.

Canon needs a new product to fill the $600-$800 price point. It's marketing 101...expect something to fill it...

I believe the smartest thing that they could possibly do is release a true "entry level" dSLR...but I'll bet real money that they don't...I smell an 8MP non-dSLR...
