After much investigation I'm down to the Canon S2 IS or the Fuji FinePix S9000. Want to spend less than $1,000 (total incl. accessories). Don't blow up to large prints (mainly post to web), but do a lot of cropping on the computer. Needs to be AA powered (std or rechargeable). Ease of use (for spouse) is a possible influencing factor.

Fuji likes: 9mp, manual zoom ring, 28mm at low-end, higher ISO range and DSLR-like options

Canon likes: better movie functionality, longer zoom, image stabilization, smaller size of camera

Fuji concern: the "anti-blur" feature (i.e. shift to higher ISO/shutter speed) may not get it done, though I rarely shoot at low light.

Canon concern: that the 5mp will limit cropping of shots

Sage advice requested! Thanks in advance!

S2 IS: more compact, better LCD design, has IS for help with tele photo shots, nice panorama mode.

S9000: large in comparisson. Usable ISO 400 and even 800, compared to the S2IS which is more noisy.

So, choose if you want IS help for tele photo shots, or better results at less ideal light conditions without using flash.
