View Full Version : Transferring avi files from my A610 to my PC....

Hi there. I just bought an A610 and I recorded a test movie. I'm trying to transfer it to my PC. On my brother's A70, you can just plug the camera in and windows will recognize it, and then you can just drag files off of the camera as if it was a normal hard drive. This is the case for the A610 as well, when it comes to pictures... but when I try to copy the avi file off of the camera, it just sits there (the camera locks up and the "active" green light on the camera just blinks indefinitely).

Has anyone else had this problem? I really, really don't want to install al that crappy software that came with the camera, so if there's a way to get these files off the camera without using that, that would be great.

Are you sure it is "indefinately" or just a really long time? Movie files on the Canons can be huge, and if you are copying using USB 1.1 it can take quite a long time.

Well.. I made a really quick, short movie, and that was only 8MB or so. It transfered instantaneously. But when I try to transfer the larger one I made (230MB), it just sits there... no "copying" pop-up (like the 8MB file had) and the light on the camera just keeps blinking. I left it alone for a very long time, and it still did nothing.

Btw, isn't this supposed to use USB 2.0 to transfer?

It is supposed to use USB 2 transfer, but USB 2 can be problematic.

If the camera is set to use USB 2 and you have no USB 2 drivers installed (or working) on the computer, this can cause problems.

First, on the computer, look in Device Manager under 'Universal Serial Bus Controller'. You should have a 'USB 2.0 Root Hub Device' or similar. If you don't, try the website of your motherboard manufacturer for a USB 2 driver.

You could also try setting the camera to USB 1.1 mode.

I had lots of problems with USB 2 transfer at first. I still have the occasional drop-out now, but much less often.

For what it's worth, I reckon Canons CameraWindow and Zoombrowser work very well together. Much easier than the manual method you're trying to use. :)

I have the same problem. Here's one example, I had one photo and three movies on the SD card. The photo transfered but the movies would not. I was able to transfer two of the AVI files by using the individual option on the camera menu, but the other would not transfer although it ran ok on the camera screen. I was able to transfer them all on another computer, however. This was with my canon A610.

I then got the Canon A620 and exactly the same problem comes up again. I have tried different USB ports, new USB drivers, and reinstalled the Asus Nforce2 motherboard utilities. Nothing has fixed the problem so far.

Previously, I had an A80 and never came across this problem.

Password, I think you should try setting the camera to USB 1.1 mode... I know it's much slower, but it should be much more stable... I tried to find how you set the camera to 1.1 mode (i've done it before), but I can't find it...
