I have a Nikon D50 and looking to get a small digital camera that will give good quality pics also. I have been reading review after review and getting somewhat frustrated on how many are out there. This can be good and bad. Im wanting something small that will fit in a pocket.
Things Im wanting
1. Good quality pics
2. Good low light pics
3. Rapid pic taking for sports with kids..Something that will give more than just 1 or 2 cont pics
4. Large LCD Screen 2.5 or 2.7
5. Long battery life
6. Image stabilization
So all in all Im wanting everything to be great and dont really know which camera will fit my needs...Most important is the quality of the image. I want it crisp in clear with good colors and not blurry or with alot of noise. Can someone make some recomendations on a great overall camera

Panasonic just announced the 6-Megapixel DMC-LZ5, it sounds like what you may be looking, I have not used it as it is a new camera, but I have been impressed with other panasonics.

That particular Panasonic will probably be crap. The FX9 makes quite bad photos with its 6mp sensor, the FX8 with its 5mp sensor does a LOT better.

Anyway, the one thing you will not be able to achieve is good low light photos. You will have to drop that one request, because only Fuji has a somewhat acceptable performance at higher ISO's but their F10/11 is not an ultra compact. Their Z1/Z2 does alright, but it does not have the very good picture quality during the day you are looking for. For the best image quality, get a Canon SD550, or a Sony P200. If you want IS (not sure why on a standard zoom found on compacts) then go for the Panasonic FX8. (the FX9 is crap).

I agree with dropping the IS on a compact. It's just not really neccesary. It works near miracles on looong telephoto's but i've never had a problem with camera shake on a compact. The sony p100 or p200 is a good pick for an all around camera. I haven't shot with the p200 but i can tell you the p100 makes great pictures so i'm assuming the p200 makes improvements on that.

For crisp and clear images the P200 would be the best choice.
But if you're really looking for a pocket sized camera, also good quality, I'd go for the new T9.

Also a very good review: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dsc_t9-review/index.shtml
